Coffee Beans - Monday Market of the Week

Coffee Beans - Monday Market of the Week

The Coffee Business Statistics Report shows that specialty coffee sales are increasing by 20% per year and account for nearly 8% of the 18 billion dollar U.S. coffee market.

Earlier this year we featured a really great niche, coffee makers and today with the help of our SaleHoo Research Lab, we found another promising coffee niche – coffee beans

Looks like coffee is indeed a great niche to get involved in!

Sell-through Rate: Did you really find a hot niche?

When I search for a niche each week, the first thing I always look at is the sell through rate.  I always check that the product I feature has a sell through rate of at least 50%.

According to our SaleHoo Research Lab, coffee beans have a sell through rate of 51.06% which clearly shows that this product has a good selling potential.

Median End Price: Is there enough room for profit?

For the Month of January, coffee beans had a median end price of $31.08. I would say that this already leaves sellers a decent mark-up considering that one of our featured wholesalers is selling a pack of trade grade organic coffee beans for only $9.

Are you a bit more convinced now?

One thing that we need to keep in mind with coffee beans, however, is that we can’t be 100% certain what volume of beans are being sold for that median end price of $31.08. It could be a few ounces of luxury beans, or five pounds of less expensive beans. One way of knowing for sure is by checking out eBay’s completed listings.

Total Listings, Total Bids and Total Sellers: How viable is your market?

As of January, there were 1,847 listings on eBay made by 1,200 sellers, the ratio of sellers to listings is a bit discouraging as it is almost 1:1. But wait! Check out the total number of bids – 3,529 almost twice as many as the actual listings!

Data Trends: Are sellers hitting their target?

No matter how promising a niche is there are days when it just doesn't do as good as we want it to. The above graph shows us that last January 7, the total revenue hit an all time low of only $50.64. But if you look further, it recovered fairly quickly and the total revenue reached an all time high of $2,613.82 by January 23.

Generally the graph shows us that coffee bean sellers have a steady income flow for the month of January.

Going beyond eBay: How popular are coffee beans online?

I used Traffic Travis to determine how often coffee beans were being searched for on Google.

What do these numbers mean?

For comparative purposes, I included the search results for “coffee bean” (the singular form) as it is very interesting to see how one letter can make such a big difference in the search counts. Notice that for “coffee bean” there are at least 49,500 searches globally and 27,100 searches in the US alone. Whereas “coffee beans” has a slight lower search count of 22,200 globally with 8,100 US searches.

A keyword search result is an easy indicator of the potential traffic you can direct to your eBay listings or online store. But it is not the only factor to consider, you also have to make sure that your site’s PR (page rank) is relatively high for your site to be easily found in search engines searches.
