Hi All,

I just start selling stuff on auctions, so I am in the middle of learning process. This morning I got a question from one of "prospective" buyer, which I believe would like to scam me, but I still don't know what method he is going to do that. The price I would like to sell is around USD 15-20 and this guy sending e-mail like this:

What is he going to do with my information he asked me ? It is impossible if the offer is genuine as the total prices including shippping is like USD 25.
Assuming paypal is safe, what is he going to do with my paypal info then...
Any comment about it ??

it's a scam, why pay more than what you ask, he's after your personal information with paypal to use himself to scam others, and you get the blame.

Paypal is not safe any more then any other service out there. They just like to make it look like they are the more secure method. I would feel more secure giving my money to a complete stranger then paypal.

This person just wants your details so he can use a stolen credit card number through paypal.

Yes, apparently it is a scam, but says he got my paypal account, what can he do ? If he wants to use my account then the money will go to me, not him. He does not ask my password for my paypal account so he can not access my account. I know it is a scam, why do you want to pay 30 times higher than I ask, it is just stupid. But I am curious if I give him my paypal account info what can he do to make money, because if he can do something bad to me, then a genuine buyer also can do that to me right ??? really curious about this.....

This is a very old scam..It basically works off of other peoples greed to get something for nothing...My point being that even after some very experienced people have warned you that this is a scam, you still are curious and probably even a bit tempted...There are several ways that the scammer can make money off of this...

The very basic is that he gets you to accept the offer with you thinking you are going to get more money than you intended to get from the sale..He pays with a phoney or stolen credit card, money order, etc. The money is deposited into your account..Then in a couple of days the bank or financial institution finds out that the credit card was invalid or money order was fake and they then charge your account for the full amount and withdraw the money..And keep in mind that this will be the full amount taken from you. You will be out the money plus the item that you already shipped....

In addition he can use your email address to run scams on other people, including yourself..One popular thing that they will do is once they have your email address they will send you an email with some sort of link in the email and when you click on it, it will have a "keyboard" virus that will allow them to capture every thing on your computer. A keyboard virus will capture every keystroke that you do. It will enable the sender to get all of your passwords, account numbers, credit card numbers, all of your information will be in their hands...And what do you think they are going to do with that?

I've been doing business online for about 10 or so years and I can honestly tell you that the net is almost overwhelmed with people looking to steal your info and money..And it works very well. They simply sit back and let greed take over. The best thing I can tell you is that if you come across something or some situation that you even have the slightest thought that might be a scam,is to not give in to the temptation. Never click on any link in any email that is not from a trusted source. In most cases it is not safe to even open an email from an un-trusted source as some virused are triggered simply by opening the email.

As to your question about "because if he can do something bad to me, then a genuine buyer also can do that to me right ? " The answer is simply "YES", a genuine buyer could also do that...The DIFFERENCE is: One is honest, the other is not.....

Thank you for the explanation. I was not tempted to give any info to this guy because it is just impossible for a person to pay 30 times higher than what I ask for.
