Guide to selling Liquidated Merchandise.

Postby jimmy_salehoo » 26/08/2008 06:20

Warning Massive Post

I have had many requests to write a guide for my website buyers. I have also decided to share this guide to salehoo members as we do get several buyers from here too. And it may help those of you buying from other liquidation sites.

This is just a guide to all buyers of ***deleted by moderator***
We want to thank you for your business and would like to share some knowledge with you about selling liquidated items and selling items in General.

We are referring to not only the Pack but truckload and pallet orders.
Pack orders are designed for small profits but are primarily designed as a test order for a buyer interested in a pallet. You will find much bigger and higher quality items in a pallet versus a Pack order.

All packs are different and contain different products. Based on what we have available at the time. Stock changes frequently. We want to let you know the best ways to profit on our pack orders as well as our pallet program. This guide will also help others that have bought liquidated stock from other sources.

Ebay sellers

Everyone loves selling on EBay. But as many have noticed, eBay has dried up a bit. It’s not you and it may not be your selling techniques. There is just not that many buyers out there like there used to be. eBay has changed so much that many have left eBay for safer odds.

We try to let our buyers know that eBay is not the only place you should be selling our products. Selling on ebay alone will give you a 70/30 percent chance of making profits on selling liquidated merchandise. Mainly because the selling value of everything has dropped badly. Mostly due to poor economy and problems eBay has caused with the sellers.

Alternatives
There are several alternatives that our experienced pack buyers are using. These include and are not limited to:

** Link Removed: Only Available to Registered Members**
The best eBay alternative and our favorite place to sell at a fixed price. The traffic this site has is huge and many eBay sellers and buyers have moved on to selling at a fixed price. You really have to have a yahoo account.

** Link Removed: Only Available to Registered Members**
The most popular free online classified site you can use to sell your products. Millions of people use this site regularly to sell their items.

** Link Removed: Only Available to Registered Members**
Another online auction company that has better rates then ebay and still generates a great flow of buyers.

Online Classifieds.
There are literally thousands of online classifieds you can list your items on. Use this method as often as you can.

Local classifieds.
Many local newspapers in your area will list an ad for you if your item is listed under $99 for free. Many of our regular pack buyers love this method as the sale is local. And they can sell items very close to their retail value.

Local Auctions
Another great way to sell items. Pick a popular auction house to take your products to and pick a busy night for them to sell your items. You would be surprised at how well some of your products will go for. We personally take 2 pallets a month to local auctions and make very nice profits on items we consider junk.

Yard/Garage sales
Never count this method out. This is still a great way to sell items. Its also a great way to find nice items to resell.

Flea Markets
Now this method is also good if you order Store Stock pallets from us. You get a lot of similar items in different sizes and these items are perfect for Flea Markets.
We cater to dozens of local flea market sellers in our area and abroad.
These are just a few of many ways you can profit from our pack order and our pallet orders too. Our most successful sellers are using these methods and making great money.

If you don’t diversify you will not succeed. Trust us. We tried selling only on Ebay long before any of you. And we can tell you first hand that only using eBay as a selling venue will cost you a lot of potential profits.

Auctions are a nice prospect, but if you realize most people don’t want to spend days bidding on an auction they will probably loose. So many prefer to use buyitnow. Or fixed price listings. So consider this when pricing our items for a fixed price.

You will make so much more if you sell a lot of items at your price and not risking them at auction.

Listing techniques.
One of our biggest secrets is that we can sell items lower then our competitors and make great profits. What you don’t know is that we can list a fixed price item higher than other sellers and our item will sell while their item just sits. The main reason we do this is because we represent every item better than many sellers. Read below to see some techniques.

Selling Techniques:
1. Multiple High resolution Pictures:
We use a Nikon D40x Camera, with a SB600 Flash module. We use a technique called Bounce Flash Google this for more info.
We take several pictures with many different angles of the product. We only choose the clearest pictures. If you have poor quality pictures you will loose alot of potential bidders.

2. Sell anything and everything even broken or damaged items.
We at ** Link Removed: Only Available to Registered Members** have the highest quality loads of any liquidator you will ever find online. And since we don’t cherry pick you will find everything from Brand New, Store Display, Customer Return, and some Distressed Merchandise. You only see a 15% at most damage ratio. But I have a tip for you sell it.

Ok now this is the area where we get the most complaints. Jimmy you sent me a broken item. I find myself shaking my head when I hear this. I have sold everything you can think of. Even a heavily used frying pan to torn comforters to a broken blender. There is nothing I won’t sell.

What many of you don’t realize is there are people looking for the accessories to a broken item. You also have people that have skills to mend or fix damaged items. If I have a favorite item and part of it breaks. I will look for a replacement part. First place I’m going to go is eBay. Then I’m going to search for that part or accessory specifically.

We will sell anything Even Parts and Accessories. If we get a item that is broken. And it has accessories, and then we sell the accessories.
Let’s say you get a: (now you can reverse these roles stated below)

crock-pot. And the lid is shattered.
Sell the Base or sell the lid if the base is broken.

Bullet Blender. And the base is non functional.
Sell the cups and blades. We’ve sold them for $23.99

Coffee maker and the pot is broken.
Sell the Base. We’ve sold this for $14.99

Bedding set with a missing piece.
Sell the rest. We’ve sold these for as much as $200.00

Vacuums missing parts. We’ve sold these for as much as $300.00

Stand Mixers Base is Broken. Sell the Bowls and the Beater Bars. We’ve sold them for $24.00

There is always someone looking for what you have. If they are not looking this week try next week. But start your price at a fair price for the accessory. That way you make money on the accessory and they get what they want.
This is the greatest part of liquidations. You can sell everything and anything. There are no limits.

Also another technique in part 3 below is working with your items.

3. Store Display and Customer Return Items.

Store Display
Now you also will have store display items. These items are items the retailer used to display the item. These items are still worth a lot of money. These are our favorite items. For example ill use 2 of our most popular buyer categories.
Bedding. 60% of your bedding if you buy into CR pallets are Display items. Most of these items come with their original bags. So with a little practice you can become a Master at folding these items and putting them back into the packages and sell them as store display items in Excellent Condition. I actually remember searching google on how to fold the fitted sheet in a sheet set. Found a Youtube video and boom I was a master at folding sheet sets. I sold many of those sets as Brand New.

Remember all of our bedding comes from a High End Retailer. Your talking items worth $60 to $1,000 sets. If your not selling even the display items your loosing countless dollars in profits. A long time ago I was throwing away these sets because I didn’t know how to fold. I lost countless profits I could have made if I had known what I know now. If you’re a Pack buyer you have probably seen these Display bedding items. If you a Pallet buyer you have seen a ton of very nice Comforters in the $500 range mixed with pillows and a bunch of sheet sets still in their packaging.

Housewares
This is one of our favorite categories as we sell a ton of housewares. Now you will see several items with tags that say “Display” Or CRC “Dummy” This means the item was used as a out of box store display. We see this in everything from Pots and Pans and even to $4,000 Cappuccino Machines. These units are generally working perfectly. Might have a beat up box and might even still have a new looking box. These are the big money makers and we really love these. Generally all your items need is a little polishing off of fingerprints.
Customer Returns.

Bedding.
70% of Customer return items are from Buyer remorse. The buyer bought the item and realized they spent a lot for it and return the product stating some kind of false damage. We have had thousands of items like this where we inspect the items and find no damage at all. Just the buyer lied to return the item. We’ve had 6 piece bedding sets worth over $1600 come in on these pallets. These are the most profitable pallets for the price we come across and we love bedding pallets.

Working with your items.
Ok now you will have a percentage that is missing a piece or a unit that has a tear or is damaged. I have had buyers tell me they threw an item away because it had a hole in it. Or it was damaged. Or it was dirty.

Again I shake my head in disbelief. People have no concept of making money therefore they will ultimately lose money if they continue with liquidations.

Let’s say you buy a pallet for $800.00 you sell all the good items in the pallet and make $750.00 and you have 5 items left.
These items are

A $499.99 Dyson DC-18 Slim Vacuum. Its missing the wand handle and is dirty.
A $400.00 Ralph Lauren King Comforter. Has a 6 inch tear on the back of the comforter
A $75.00 Magic Bullet Blender no cups or blades.
A $199.00 Cookware set: dirty/used
A $79.00 Delonghi Griddle: Dirty Used/Greasy

Ok these are just some Items I have heard that buyers have thrown away and these are Items I manage and sell everyday. Heres what I would do and have done over and over again.

The Dyson.
I get these all the time in every condition. First I would goto Dysons Website. And buy the Wand Handle for $39.99 Then I would disassemble the cleaner head assembly and clean out the brushes and the inside of the cleaner head. That would take me 20 min. Then I would take apart the Cyclone assembly and the bin and clean both of them very well. Its plastic folks cleaning plastic is too easy to make the unit look new again. Then I would go over the unit and clean anything that is dirty to the naked eye. In 4 days when the Wand Handle arrives I will install it and take multiple pics of the item.

Overall extra time cleaning time 1 hour. Wait 4 days for the Handle to arrive and im ready to list. Item sells for $260.00

The Ralph Lauren King Comforter.
I will take 1 detailed picture of the tear. And list the item honestly and in full detail just as if it was a new item. I would note that this is a great item for someone that can mend a small tear.

Wait till the auction closes and the unit sells for $49.00

The magic Bullet Blender.
I will take the base since the cups and blades are missing and list just the base.

Wait until the auction closes and it sells for $27.00

The cookware set.
Ok most cookware sets will sell better separately then together. Let’s say the unit has 12 pieces with 7 actual pots and pans. I would take this set and use a non abrasive cleaning product specifically for metal. I love to use sonic scrubbers. If you haven’t seen them they have them on TV right now. I have 4 sets of them. $20 bucks for 2 sets. This takes all the hard work out of cleaning and preparing pans for resale.

Once items are cleaned well you can get a judgment on the condition of the unit or decide if the item can be listed as a store display unit. I do this all the time. I list used items as store displays because most of my used items are cleaned to near mint condition. If it’s still not good enough list them as used once customer return but in excellent condition.

C’mon people stainless steel is called stainless steel for a reason. It can be cleaned. Sometimes it takes a while but if you spend 1 hour cleaning to sell items for good money it’s worth it.

So you’re selling 4 of those pans for $25 and your larger items sell for $50.00 for a combined total of $250.00 yes a $199 set for $250 by selling the units separately.

I actually used this technique last Christmas season. I was selling complete sets for $47.00 then I decided to break down all the sets into singles and sold each single for $30-$45 each unit.

The Delonghi Griddle. Ok last but not least. Same as above I clean the unit. I use a soft scrubbing item to get the hard stuff off and use Palmolive to clean the rest of the unit. I get the item looking as perfect as possible and inspect the unit for scratches. If there are some I list the item as a used customer return. It sells for $30.00

So now that we have gone over the techniques I used on these items we have come to a total of $616.00 Minus lets say $60 To ship the 5 items listed above. For a Profit of $556.00.

Take the $750 you made prior as profit
And add the $556.00
$1306 was now the total take on the pallet. After Costs that pallet made you $506

If you threw those items away because you didn’t want to work on them you would have lost all of your profits.
The kinds of people that don’t use their head and throw away these good items that can still be sold are just plain stupid or lazy. Don’t be one of those people.

4.Actual Listing techniques.
This part will take some effort on your part. If you’re an ebay, craigslist or another auction site seller. If you have to create your own listing format, or html description. Then you must have a little skill in creating a template to use.

For ebay you can search the internet for a template to use in your listings. Get a html editor to help you add pictures and information. Dreamweaver is our favorite. Also a Photobucket account to store pictures is a plus. Ebay picture services costs money. Its free to use Photobucket.

Now in your description use the method above of using multiple pictures. Be very descriptive of your description. If your one of our Pack and pallet customers go to macys.com and get descriptions from Macys website on the products you have if they have them.

Paste the full description in the listing and make sure you have a sellers notes category.

Here you can enter your own personal notes about the item. If you see scratches or anything you think your buyer should know. Be very descriptive. Not having enough info deters customers and bidders.

If you have selling terms, shipping terms, end of auction terms put them into a separate table below your description. Make sure you address everything from your handling time to what service you use for shipping.

Also always provide tracking. If you have tracking you have a 33% chance your item will sell for more than if you don’t offer tracking.

Always leave your contact information in the description. Your name address, phone and best times to call you.

Ok one of the key things to selling for us is how we present the item. We want everyone to know we sell high end merchandise.

Customer Return Unit from a Major Retailer. ( Good for Obvious Returns or items with damage)

Overstock Unit from a Major Retailer.(new Items in box or packaging)

Display Unit from a Major Retailer.(if your item looks new but barely passes)

Demo Unit from a Major Retailer. (Works perfect but can’t be cleaned perfectly due to tight spots you can’t reach) This is generally used for house wares.

We have found using this exact wording in our auctions allows us to sell at a higher rate than without.

Now you will have items you just don’t want to sell as they may be a filler item or now selling high enough online. We recommend you hold these kinds of items and sell them at public auction. You will be very surprised at what you get for them.

With whatever you do it’s the way you do it that determines your absolute profit.

Not every pack or pallet purchase will make you a lot of money. Its something we cannot fully guarantee. Because we don’t know what kind of seller you are. You may not do great with one pack while another one makes you a ton of money.

One thing to remember. Nothing will sell immediately and for instant profits. Sometimes you wont make profits on a order. You need consistent volume. What I mean by consistent volume is you always have stock coming in while you’re selling the stock you have. This way you never stop selling. And you always have items making you money.

We have pallet buyers that order from us once they get their latest delivery. That way they always have something to sell. If one pallet is not that profitable they are already into the next pallet with another on order and on the way.
Every pallet is different with its own profit gems and its potential loss. You can have a bad week. Everyone does. But what separates success from failure is giving up.
Let’s say you buy 4 pallets over a month period. 1 pallet a week and let’s say all the pallets had 65 items on them.
If you sell pallet 1 and make $250
If you sell pallet 2 and lose $280
If you sell pallet 3 and make $800
If you sell pallet 4 and Make $1300.

Your total profit would be $2350.00 in a single month in profits. If you had stopped at pallet 2 because you lost more than you gained or it didn’t sell as well as you expected then you lose.

What you missed out on was that pallet that had that really expensive item on pallet 3 and 4 on it that was in perfect selling condition and heavy profit margins.

Also If you stop and wait for that last item to sell your loosing time. And time is money. You want to have the maximum amount of items you can sell. Some love to spend their profits as fast as they get them and once they take a small loss it’s the end of the world. If you’re in this for a business and for getting away from that 9-5 job. You need to invest your time, money.

We have regular pack buyers that are making profits with every single pack they get. But we have others that buy packs containing the same items that can’t sell cow manure to a farmer with bad soil. So we have created this guide to help the inexperienced sellers

I had a pack buyer from here in Decatur a few weeks back say they couldn’t give their pack away for $50.00 she came to my warehouse and requested a refund.

So I took care of her and opened up the pack. Then I shrugged my shoulders as the pack looked normal to me. It had an assortment of bedding, clothing, swimwear and a few housewares items and some holiday trinkets. Which are your average pack contents, as they are the most popular items chosen by ** Link Removed: Only Available to Registered Members** members.

The total retail stickers came to $643.00 which is average for a Profit pack. So just as a test, I handed that pack to my wife. I told her she could have all the money she made on the pack if she sold it just to be a smart-aleck. She sold the contents of that pack in 3 days to friends for $220 bucks. Then took me out on a Dinner and a movie date, and well of course she bought herself some shoes =P
My wife is one of those people that goes crazy when the school has a fundraising book with candy bars and candles to raise money for the kids.
Most of the time she beats out every other parent because she wants the extra points for the free gift for our kids.

If my wife can sell these packs and not even touch a computer then it shows to me that that woman was a terrible sales person or didn’t even want to try. Heck we have members of salehoo state they sold their packs to friends before they could think of putting them online.

At ** Link Removed: Only Available to Registered Members** we give you the means to make good money. But you still have to work to make your money. This is not a click to get rich job. It’s a lot of hard work. Just remember when you get your order. If we are not filling packs and pallet orders at the warehouse. We are selling these very same items on EBay, Amazon, Craigslist, Local Auctions and more.

Since we started brokering direct with retailers we haven't lost money on liquidations.

I personally work over 100 hours a week. But I have over $4,000 in sales a month Part time on ebay alone selling about 2 pallets of goods.

We sell on eBay to show our buyers and eBay customers how well our items will sell. We suggest other methods to our buyers because eBay is getting a little harsh on eBay members with fees and it’s more profitable to sell elsewhere.
So I hope this guide will help all of our buyers and future buyers learn some tricks and techniques we use to make money on liquidations.

If you want to ditch your 9-5 and have a decent part time income then liquidated retail merchandise is what you need to invest your time into. We have several skilled buyers with over $5,000 in sales per month.

They know the tricks of this trade. And after reading this guide. Hopefully you do too. =)

A great wealth of information Jimmy! Extremely easy concepts to grasp and that are clearly explained. And I think this speaks volumes about your desire to not JUST sell through your liquidation business, but to also enable your customers to succeed with the merchandise you sell to them. I appreciate that you do not even try to inflate the earnings potential of the pallets and packs that you sell, but instead help people understand the potential of every single item which, in turn, will allow everyone to maximize their profit potential as a whole.
Very impressive, hats off to you bud!

Thanks for the compliment. I do try my best to teach people to have a clear head about what they get into. I think too many people are dreaming of that goblet of gold but don't want to put the time into earning it. I put about 4 hours into writing this guide.

I think many people buy our profit packs expecting them to make them double or triple their value. This is possible if you sold the items close to retail but to be more down to earth I expect $30 to $100 profit for an online seller. You have to keep at it. Learn your limitations and try to see past ebay and sell everywhere. If your a woman, most of our buyers are. Sell items to your friends. Im sure you have at least 10 friends that like to buy macys products.

If you live in a town that has free advertising in the newspaper for items under 100. Take that Charter Club bedding item you got from us worth $140 and list it for $70 Bucks. Once sold you just made half of your pack back on a single item. If a person can go into a retail store and pay full price for an item. You can bet they would love to pay half price for it. 3% of the online community shops on eBay. Only 10% of the worlds population has a computer. Do the Math. Everyone else pays retail and would kill to get a deal from the Newspaper.

Or you can goto ebay only and sell the same item and make $30 on it.

I have lost a ton of money in this business learning the things I do now. I lost over $16,000 last year on liquidations and some of it was by not utilizing proper sales techniques. I didnt give up because I lost some money. I kept at it and learned that I could make money using better selling and preparation techniques.

I used to be one of those people throwing away money into a dumpster. I actually filled up dumpsters with pots and pans that now I clean up and sell on ebay for thousands per year. One of the bad things a family member teases me about is I could have sold all those pans as scrap too.

I used to throw away comforters and blankets and sheet sets that we not in the packages or were torn because I though they wouldn't sell for much. Then I decided one day. If I fold this up and sell it without the package. How much would it sell for? Then I started doing just that and started making money on items I thought wouldn't get a bid for 99 Cents. Then all of a sudden I have 3 watchers, 6 Watchers, 10 Watchers. Then that item sold for $10,$20,$40,$80.

Many Items I first thought they were just junk. But one day I said. I wonder If I can clean this up or I wonder if I can sell this part of that damaged item. I wonder if I sell this here or there can I make more money then on Ebay.

Then the Profits Started coming in. Then I started Buying more and more and well now here I am. Actually selling pallets and truckloads instead of just selling this stuff myself.

Hi Jimmy,

I Love the idea with PPW so I have started the same in Australia. I think it would be great to take advantage of what you offer, but the shipping and customers cost outway the advantage.

I so far have a great name, website and location, I just need some advice on the types of resourses I will need, and how to approach these department stores for my offer?

I think I will have great success in Aus/NZ but I want to get it right and then I can start advertising on Salehoo for all those people wanting stock in Aus/NZ.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Liquidated stock distribution in Australia is vastly different to that in the US. Our retailers do not have liquidation tenders, with most stock moved through sale type promotions.

Larger liquidations, such as foreclosures, are dealt with through auctions where you are quite able to bid, but you are not able to secure any arrangement with the company on an outright purchase of products.

If you want to get involved with liquidated stock, then my advice is to import by the container load to keep your unit price down as much as possible. Shipping will of course increase your unit price overall, but if you buy the right products direct from a liquidator then you have a excellent chance at still making good margin.

My tip, forget about trying to set up a brokerage because shipping cost will do too much damage to margin, which will only end up burning your customers and see the operation struggle for traction. Import and distribute directly to the end user is not be the quickest way to unload a container full of stock, but I think you will find it may be the only viable option.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for the info.. I have always looked at ebay for a place to sell .... well, anything.!
I like the idea to diversify, paves the way for more profits.
I am a bit tired of trying to sell my own items.. Pallets seem to be a great idea, but most people dont realize the actual cost of shipping those pallets can really cut into your profit margin. I will continue to check out this site and the posts and see what things i need to change to become a true in home business. I appreciate the time you take to explain and help all of us. newbies and experienced. Thanks a ton!

Just to let you know as far as me doing liquidated truckloads to Overseas buyers. I will not do this again. I have Been working on a Double truckload of products for an Australian group for over 2 months. I am in the home stretch but Im looking at 2 weeks just working on paperwork and legalities. Its a huge endeavor and is costing me more then its worth in time and money. Its also hurting my own business as I have limited space in my warehouse to stock up on products I want to have for my own customers. From now on any truckload orders are direct from the Retailer to your Docks. I will not store a buyers products in my warehouse again.

It would be much easier if it were just brand new products in massive bulk but liquidated goods has so many items I have to record and get category B's for. That I will not do this again.

Thanks for the information Jimmy,

I had a question on postage and handling for products. Many buyers on ebay consider this to be an important factor when leaving feedback, and for return sales. For your items that you sell on ebay (or any other form on online site), how do you pack and rap your items (ie you have a blender in a box, how do you present it when posting off to a buyer?).

This is very important to me, as i have only sold smaller items that do not have this issue, but i am looking into selling larger boxed items.

Hi Jimmy, I was thinking of buying a mystery pack from you, can you tell me a little bit what's in the mystery pack and if I'm better selling bid auction or fixed price format with these items, thank you Mario.

Generally I use Bubble wrap and lots of it. Most people dont care how its wrapped as long as it survives shipping. I tend to wrap the item in a bunch of bubble wrap and ship in a box close to its size. I generally have several hundred boxes laying around from pallets we purchase and keep the boxes.

The key things most buyers are concerned about.
Speedy Delivery
Honest Price for Shipping.
Free Shipping.
Communication throughout the Transaction.
Follow up after item has been shipped.

Hey Jimmy,
I think it's time you seriously consider writing a book. Don't forget my commission for putting that idea in your head when you do. LOL

Hey Jimmy, could you check your PMs and answer my most recent one? It's kind of important.

This was an awesome primer for selling items on your ppwdg site. I just ordered a standard test pack a little while ago and am anxious to see what's in it. I've done the whole ebay thing with a good amount of success but in the past three years they've changed a great deal. I think recently they're trying to make the selling environment a little more hospitable with the fee structure changes etc. Anyways, I'm tired of ebay(for now) and find it inspiring to read different ways to sell product.

Anyways, i'm fairly confident in the quality of merchandise you carry(as well as fair pricing) vs all the other suppliers i've seen and am looking forward to working with you in the future. I haven't even gotten my test pack and am looking forward to purchasing the pallet size order very soon.

Thanks for yet another informative post Jimmy!
PS. Shouldn't this be a sticky?
