In general the most successfull ebay powersellers make on average 1 to 5 dollars for each transaction. You might not think thats alot but if you consider that you should sell more to make more then your on the right track. Most of my auctions I bring in 3-5 dollars profit on each item sold. But if you consider that the number 1 powerseller on ebay averages 18,000 feedbacks recieved each month meaning he sells possibly on average 23,000-28,000 items a month due to repeat buyers.Wholesale Directory by SaleHoo

General items are a great way to go. Or even starting with items around your house that you don't need anymore. Take a look at link hidden there are lots of items that are below what they are selling for on eBay and you only need to start with $150 to get started.

You almost have to put insurance on each item. How safe do you feel mailing out so much? But, then again, if something gets lost or stolen, you're not losing so much money, because the profit margin is so small. But it seems like less trouble and risk involved the less you deliver. Any thoughts?

If the item being shipped is worth less then $100 dolars then you do not need to purchase insurane through UPS. UPS automatically inures any item upto $100.
