    Website directories - Alternatives to the search engine game?

    Probably like a lot people I am tired of the Search Engine game with all the optimization rules and tricks. I would really like to find a good website directory. Nothing too fancy - just a simple database that categorizes websites and allows users to rate them. I guess it would be something like the Yellow Pages for websites. I know these exist but I cannot seem find the one or two that has the largest listing. I would appreciate a few referrals.

    Sounds to me like you've described the SaleHoo directory perfectly or are you talking about all website categories, not just product supply type sites?

    Hi and welcome to SaleHoo, gcoxusa :)

    SaleHoo is a directory and may just be the one you are looking for. We have other 8,000 suppliers in our search-able directory. You may use the search box 'Search SaleHoo' on the upper right corner of your screen or click on the 'Directory' tab to get a per category view.

    Like fudjj said, you pretty much described SaleHoo :)

    I’m not talking about product supply type of sites. I’m referring to all website categories. The Salehoo format would be great if it covered all website categories and was low cost or free (like the Yellow Pages in the phone book).

    Let’s say you are a merchant and you put up a website to sell widgets, and you’ve got the lowest prices on the Internet. Chances are that nobody will find you if they are using a search engine. Your site might not even appear in the search results anywhere (forget about page 1).

    I guess the best thing is for me to provide an example, so here is one site that comes pretty close to what I was looking for: link hidden

    The only issue is that they don’t provide any ratings that I can see.

    But I can't find any that shows ratings for each site.

    I use shopping.yahoo.com when I want to search for an item and compare prices across several stores. I know it cannot do this for a website, but that's the closest I can think of in terms of what you were wishing for in a website directory.
