Instant Photo Devices: Monday Market of the Week

Instant photos are back! Whether it's the modern take on Polaroid-esque instant cameras or handy smartphone printers; these toys for the tech-savvy photographers and crafters have stormed the market this week in the lab!

The nostalgic feel of holding a physical photo in your hand soon after the shutter clicks makes instant photo devices much-desired by certain groups of consumers. Stick those photos on a wall in a college dorm, put them in scrapbooks, or gift those photos to a friend; however you approach them, physical moments preserve the moment in the way an Instagram feed just can't.

Photography enthusiasts, scrapbookers and crafters, and anyone craving a nostalgia fix are promising markets for these products, but let’s find out whether the data in the SaleHoo market research lab backs up my hunch.

Types of Instant Photo Devices

There are many types of instant photo devices with specific featur es. The examples below are most common in the market.

Instant Photo Printers

These devices print photos directly from smartphones or tablets, using a wired or wireless connection. While they're often full-size devices, you can still print a photo right after a shot is taken.

Instant Cameras

The iconic Polaroid cameras of the past have evolved. These new instant cameras use self-developing film that prints right after taking a picture. Some are even capable of uploading the photos to Instagram at the same time. They often have a vintage look to them.

Instant Digital Camera

While these devices look and function like traditional point-and-shoot cameras, they can also print photos instantly, upload to the web and other devices, and much more. .

ZINK® (Zero-ink) Printers
Polaroid, PRYNT, and LG have partnered up with ZINK® to develop a full-color printing system that uses “zero ink", eliminating the need for ink cartridges, toners, and ribbons. These printers only work with ZINK® Paper.
Mobile Printers

These handy photo printers are literally designed to fit in your hand, with dimensions as small as a smartphone. They can instantly print pictures using Bluetooth or NFC technology, meaning they'll work with almost every sort of smartphone.

Why Sell Instant Photo Devices?

Performance on eBay and Amazon

Below are 3 examples of instant photo devices in the Market Research Lab. Looking at key data including sell rate, competition, and average selling price is the best way to see whether selling instant photo devices could actually yield a profit for the eager online seller.

Success rate Instant Photo DevicesSuccess rate Instant Photo DevicesSuccess rate Instant Photo Devices

  • High Sell Rate

A high sell rate is a good indicator of how many products are actually moving in the online marketplace. A sell rate of at least 50% is a good indicator that there's at least a decent interest. The higher the sell rate, the better.

Based on the data from the lab, we're looking at sell rates ranging from our baseline of 50% to a very exciting 100% for our sample instant photo devices, which is promising. You may want to take note that Polaroid and Fujifilm are both popular brands in this niche. Mobile/smartphone printers and instant digital cameras are both in demand based on our lab data, but there are many other choices as well.

  • High Average Selling Price

A high selling price often yields a high profit margin. Low-cost items often have very slim (or worse, nonexistent) margins.  The data in the lab shows an average price for instant photo devices from $112 to $200. If you can keep with our recommended 10% profit margin on these devices (remember, you need to factor in purchase price, storage costs, selling fees and transaction fees into the final numbers), you could be earning as much as $20 per sale.

Don't forget: if you purchase these items in bulk, you can maximize your profits more effectively than if you dropship!

  • Low Competition

Our data from the lab suggests there's low competition in this niche! That's great because the fewer sellers and the fewer listings out there, the more likely consumers are to find you. Low competition also helps you avoid price wars, which can hurt your profits when you're forced to try to compete with other sellers who might have greater resources and buying power.

General Demand

Keywords play a vital role in bringing traffic to your listings. The data gathered from AffiloTools Keyword Research makes it easier for you to discover what phrases consumers are using when they're looking for instant photo devices on search engines such as Google.

*Note: The keyword search results will give you a long list, but below are 6 top examples.

keyword research

Once again, we see that Polaroid and Fujifilm are popular brands for instant photo devices. "Polaroid film" shows high demand with a search volume of 22,200. Also, notice that Fujifilm's Instax line is likely a very popular choice given how many variations of the keyword we see just in the top 6 results. And even when ignoring brands, the results still shows high search volumes for "instant film camera," and "instant photo printer."

You'll want to do some more in-depth research on keywords and specific products (or lines of products) before you commit to anything, but it's up to you to decide which products to stock in your online store.

Extra Bonuses

The AffiloTools Research Tool also gave us another tip: instant film is also in demand (that's not surprising since most instant photo devices won't work without film!). Bundle the film (and possibly other accessories, such as cords) with the correct instant photo device to draw attention to your listings. You can also maximize your profit by purchasing instant photo devices and all their accessories, including film, in bulk. Contact the suppliers directly as they rarely post their wholesale rates on their website.

With photography as popular as it's ever been, and maybe more so, these hip and totally retro instant photo devices are definitely in demand. Look into well-known brands such as Polaroid and Fujifulm; you can also choose from a wide range of devices, including mobile printers and instant digital cameras, all of which have different feature sets and advantages.

Earn additional sales by also listing all a variety of accessories related to your chosen products, or bundle these products — including film — to your core offering to attract buyers to your listings.

How to Sell Instant Photo Devices

Not sure where to start selling? Here are a few ways to get your feet wet and still be successful:

1. eBay or Amazon

You’ve seen the data from the lab, which shows that instant photo devices on eBay and Amazon have high sell-through rates, with low competition and potentially high profit margins.

Get ahead of your competition by offering free shipping, or discuss with your supplier on offering after-sales services and money-back guarantees for your buyers.

2. Your Own Online Store

Having your own online store lets you avoid the often-fierce competition in marketplaces such as eBay. Just make sure to use the right keywords when listing your products, to bring lots of high-quality traffic to your site.

You can try AffiloTools to find the right keywords that will elevate your site to the top of the search engine results pages. If you want free advertising, you can submit your product listings to Google product search or advertise your online store via social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

3. Join Local Photography or Craft Clubs

Research local photography or craft clubs in your area, as they are the perfect targets for instant photo devices. By participating in and contributing valuable insights to group discussions, you can discover the needs and wants of the market while also advertising your business to interested groups.
