Get Started

Hey, there!

My name is Charles, I’m the Product Manager here at SaleHoo. I’m thrilled you’ve decided to join us and I want to briefly explain how you can get the most out of SaleHoo when selling online.

SaleHoo is a product sourcing directory of genuine and verified suppliers, including dropshippers, wholesalers and liquidators. It’s used by over 137,000 Amazon, eBay and online store owners to research and source items for resale.

Note that SaleHoo is not a supplier. We don’t supply any products ourselves, instead, we help you connect with top suppliers from all over the world.

You can use SaleHoo to find suppliers for products you already know you want to sell, or use our research labs to get new ideas for products to sell.

Why does this matter?

Because great suppliers means great products shipped on time, which means happy customers. Happy customers spend more and refer more of their friends to your site.

In other words…

More money in your pocket.

Now then, there are two things you’ll learn in this getting started section:

  1. How to start wholesale retail or dropshipping
  2. Online selling best practices

It won’t take you long to read, but it will give you a better understanding on how to make more money with your business and get the most out of your SaleHoo membership. So please keep reading!

Depending on what you’re looking to do, you can jump to either of the following sections:

  1. Drop shipping via eBay, Amazon or your own store or
  2. Wholesale selling through these same channels.

After these two sections, you’ll learn what to look for in a good product and how to find a great supplier. Let’s dive in!

What is drop shipping and how can I master it?

In a nutshell…

Dropshipping works because it's simple and effective.

It’s a way for you to sell products on your store without ever holding inventory or shipping anything. Instead, your supplier - (the drop shipper) - ships your products directly to your customer when you receive an order.

It’s inexpensive to get started, low risk since you don’t need to hold or buy any inventory and you can run your business from anywhere with an internet connection.

You may be thinking, “But what if I can’t find a supplier in my country?”

Although drop shipping from suppliers in your own country is ideal, some of the best prices and most sellable products come from suppliers abroad and particularly those in China. So no need to panic if you can’t find a suitable supplier in your own country!

(To learn more about dropshipping in general, go read our full guide.)

What is wholesale selling and how can I master it

In a nutshell…

Wholesale selling works because it has very high margins.

You buy items at a wholesale price (meaning you’re basically paying for materials and labor without any markup), then sell them at a higher price.

It’s somewhat expensive to start, but it’s typically much more profitable than dropshipping, which is where you hold no inventory.

You may be thinking, “But what if I can’t find a supplier in my country?”

Although purchasing from suppliers in your own country is ideal, some of the best prices and most sellable products come from suppliers abroad and particularly those in China. So no need to panic if you can’t find a suitable supplier in your own country!

What Should I Sell?

It’s incredibly important that you choose the right products for your store. The right inventory will practically sell itself!

“But SaleHoo doesn’t have a supplier for my product! What should I do?”

If we don’t have suppliers for your products, it’s probably because they are from tightly controlled brands. I highly recommend you stay away from big name brands like Apple, Gucci, or Nike because they are very strict about their rules and have incredibly high competition (and low margin).

And although we have millions of products, we don’t have absolutely everything. No one does. But we’re confident you’ll find what you’re looking for!

So what should you sell?

Here are some characteristics of a great product:

  • Retail price of $20 to $150 which maximises conversions and margins.
  • Small and lightweight to reduce shipping costs.
  • Requires multiple components or accessories (for upselling and cross-selling)
  • Is not highly confusing or requires a complicated installation
  • Disposable or renewable

If you’re wondering why these make great characteristics, head over to our product selection guide (applies to drop shipping and wholesale). We also reveal some common mistakes people make when choosing a product.

If you’re the kind of person who just wants to know what’s working right now (hey, me too), then here are some of the most sought after product ideas right now:

  • Muslin blankets
  • Kids play tents
  • Pet sleeping cushions
  • Foam fitness rollers
  • Custom t-shirts, mugs, or phone cases
  • Portable AC units
  • Phone cases and screen protectors
  • Zero gravity lounge patio chairs
  • Pet hair brush
  • OxGord kid’s scooter

Keep in mind that as soon as something is suggested as a great product, everyone who reads it jumps on board and suddenly it’s way more competitive! So it’s not a bad idea to do some of your own research :)

Luckily, SaleHoo’s market research labs make it super easy to find hot products flying off the shelves in real time. Here’s how it works:

How to find the perfect supplier?

Finding the perfect supplier is just a matter of knowing what to look for!

Specifically, a great supplier will:

  • Sell a high-quality product
  • Offer white label shipping services
  • Have fast shipping and fulfillment times
  • Allow easy, hassle-free returns
  • Give stellar, fast customer support

So, how do you find this gem of a supplier?

The easiest way is to punch your product idea into your new SaleHoo directory.

Be sure to reach out to at least 5 suppliers - the more the better though! Our research shows those members who contact more suppliers have a greater chance of successfully selling online.

This is because, like all suppliers, not everyone will get back to you, and you want to have options. That way, you can negotiate pricing and terms and you have a backup in case your supplier ever runs out of inventory or goes out of business.

Plus, the more you contact, the more value you get from your SaleHoo subscription!

Now, when reaching out, you’ll probably see a lot of suppliers with poor looking websites.

Don’t worry - this is normal in this industry.

Many suppliers have been around a long time and tend to focus most of their time and attention on producing great products instead of keeping their websites updated!

You’ll also probably see a lot of sites that require you to log in to see wholesale pricing. This is a good thing - you don’t want just anyone to be able to see the prices you’re getting.

Quick Tip
  • Save any promising suppliers for easy access and comparison from your SaleHoo dashboard.
  • Ask your suppliers for a price list for easy price comparisons. Just hit “contact supplier” and tell them you want their price list!

That’s about all I have to tell you for now. If you need more help finding the perfect supplier, here’s our full guide.

Remember: You have a full year of SaleHoo, so use it! Very few businesses are an overnight success. Persistence is the key here.

And we’re here if you ever need any help! Just hit the “contact us” button in the footer and a SaleHoo employee will answer any questions you have (even if you just want to say hi!).

Good luck, get stuck in!
