What is a reseller's license?

Is this something separate from the EIN#?

I am just in the process of getting a business license and I wasn't sure if this was something i could get before that... or do i get a resellers license after i have my business/name set up?

What does a reseller license do/provide for a wholesaler that a business name/id# won't provide?

Hello Knight,

A reseller certificate is issued by your state. It is a separate document from the business license issued by the town/city you live in. It's basically for sales tax reporting purposes.

Ok, thanks... and since we don't have sales tax in Oregon, is that still necessary??

OK the reseller license allows business owners to purchase good for resale without paying taxes at the point of purchase. The taxes will be paid by the consumer, collected by you the business and paid to the state either monthly or quarterly.

So for anyone in Oregon who might read this...

I just learned that the Registration# you receive when you register your business name is the same number that's used for your Reseller License.

Spoke to a BUNCH of government officials before someone finally could answer that one for me.... *phew* (hopefully i'll spare u that pain!) lol

I thought in Oregon all you needed to buy and sell (internet) was your federal tax id number.....

Hi Claudia,

Your federal tax id number (EIN) is for federal tax purposes, which is why it is issued by the IRS.

Your state reseller license is issued by your state and is for state tax, reporting and documentation purposes.

The two are not interchangeable -- you need to have both.
