Customs broker in Canada needed

I'm looking to import some items from the US and I have never done so before, I figure its best to use a Custom broker to help me get it into Canada.

I would like to know how do they generally charge for their services and if its something negotiable and I would appreciate any tips or advise on how to find brokers and negotiate with them to determine the final value of the goods delivered to me, so I can decide to import the item or just find another one.

Can anyone recommend a good and reasonably priced broker in the Toronto area?

Sorry being a none Canadian citizen or resident, I have no previous experience with any of the brokers there so it would be hard for me to make a recommendation. There are quite a few however when you do a Google search.

This site will definitly help me, but I have been always wondering do I need to hire a custom broker for any size of order? or does it have to be in container quantities?

The quantity that I'm trying to get in the begining is not very big, just small gadgets from china, maybe $200 - $300 worth

An order that size will most likely come through the post, unless you arrange with the supplier to send via Fedex or a similar carrier. No Customs Broker required at all.

Talk to the supplier about shipping options.

Thank you all for your help this is Great information, but I have found exactly what im looking for, the company is called freightboy.ca

they offer to receive your product to their warehouse near the canadian border (to take advantage of the free shipping option within the US) and then move it across the border to you.

I haven't contacted them yet but I found their website and it seems pretty good, I will contact them tomorrow,

Does anyone have any insight on these kind of practices?
