I'm looking forward to selling large amounts on ebay but my question is, which specific licenses are required to actually do so in New York state?

Business license
Seller's permit
Tax id
federal id
DBA (is this really required? would my DBA be my ebay account username?)

am i missing anything? I want to approach this business in the correct way and would love to start asap but seems like it will take over a month to get all these things done.

Hi Duckduckday,

From what I understand you would need a Tax id, if your selling new goods other than your own around the house, and a Business license would be the important things to have. As far as bed Id not sure about that nor the seller's permit. Usually getting a tax id can be done in less than an hour to obtain which can now be done online.

Hope this helps!

Hi Duckduckday,

To find out whether you need to get a sales tax ID, just Google

You only need to pay sales tax if you sell something to someone in your state or live in CA TX NJ and a couple others. Other than that you need not pay sale tax to your state for an online business.

To start an eBay business, you can start right away without any licenses. But of course to becomes a big seller, getting those things mentioned should be done.

Thank you so much for the responses!

So planes, from what you are saying. To sell on ebay, i don't really need to aquire any licenses or tax id? All i have to do is pay the sales tax, for the people who are buying from me within my own state? By the way I am located in New York.

Let's say if i become a powerseller who begins to list over 100 items per month, would it be suggested to get the business license?

sorry for so many question.. I appreciate all the help. thanks again!

I am not sure if you even legally need a business license ever. I'm not a lawyer but I don't know of any law that states if you are an online business you need a business license. I haven't seen eBay ever state such either.

You should eventually get a state sales tax license to pay taxes for sales initiated in your state or if you live in certain states.

Certain Wholesale companies will require a reseller license. In Mass, where I live, there is a sale tax certificate which holds your social as your sales tax ID and is what I give wholesalers, when they request it, to purchase from them.
BUT, in my state, you do not have to pay sale tax on garage sales or they are not bothered with.

To start selling 'today' on eBay, you do not need any license whatsoever. But for what I have mentioned earlier.

Hi, duckduckday.

I live in NY and I have all the business legal stuff. You can sell here W/O being a business if you stay small. You only have to declare the sales income for tax purposes. I am not fully sure but I think you use a 1099 form.

You can sell on eBay or Bonanzle or Atomic Mall any selling platform. Maybe you can contact your accountant for a certain dollar value before you need to register for a business.

In dealing with Salehoo Suppliers you may want to get legal. So go list today.

You need 3 DBA forms and go to your County Clerk's office with $35 -$40.00.
Type DBA into Google. You can find one to download.
Type Federal Tax ID # into Google. It will take you to a 1-800#. Wait until after 6pm. You will get in with no waiting on hold. They can Help you with the state tax ID.

Glad to have you onboard with Salehoo.

Good advice Beachdisney.

I would wait on the EIN number until you have a staff to pay or are setting up a business account with Paypal and you dont want them to have your SSN.
