Hi, I want to know how to I begin to sell? Do I have to contact the suppliers personally or can I just find a product and start selling it or what? Do I email these suppliers to get legal selling rights.

Hi tatabug,

Yes, you have to get in touch with the supplier not necessarily to get reselling rights. Rather to order the products that you want to sell through your store or auction accounts. Because of you list products for sale you must be sure you have stock or your supplier has stock so once your customer decides to buy then you actually have a product to ship to him.

What particular products do you want to sell? Are you planning to source your products from a dropshipper/wholesaler/liquidator?

Please let us know so we can help you accordingly.

Talk to you soon :)

The main thing you need to get started is some time to spend doing supplier and product research. This is really important, as the decisions on what to sell and the best suppliers to use take a bit of research and comparison.

It's helpful if you have at least $100 to spend on your wholesale lot. If you don't, I recommend selling stuff from around the house to raise the money. You may also download the New User Manual Link hidden: Login to view (it is located at the bottom of the page). It covers everything you need to get started. :) This 19-page guide lays out how to find and order from a supplier step-by-step. It is an essential reading for newbies and seasoned retailers alike.

The guide covers:

* Getting ready to use suppliers. What will suppliers want from you? How to get prepared.
* How to find and use a supplier in SaleHoo’s directory
* How to contact a supplier and what to ask
* What are wholesale prices?
* How to get the best wholesale price from a supplier
* Placing your order
* Frequently asked questions

If there is anything else we can do to help, just send us a message. Welcome to SaleHoo!

Hello,
I am new to salehoo. I have an established power seller on ebay. I am wanting to start building my income more and more over the winter. My questions is does anyone have any suggestions on where I should start. I would like to purchase some less expensive items, and build upon that and work my way into more pricey items. Slowly I would like to build my buying and selling potenial. Any suggestions on merchandise, and suppliers would be very helpful. Or where this question will be best posted. Thank you in advance.

Welcome dameferd - nice to have you with us :)

You're on the right track! Selling (unused/old) stuff from one's own house is a great way to get the feel at what it is to sell online. Plus it gives you the chance to explore your market without too much out of pocket and generate feedback as well.

Please feel free to read all you can on the forum, our guides in the education section and don't forget our blogs too!

I also recommend keeping in touch with us on Facebook and Twitter for daily wholesale and eBay selling tips:

I am really discouraged. I have worked for 2 weeks trying to find suitable dropshippers at a good price. I can not purchase 100 to 1000 pieces or a truckload of things either. I have been in the large ticket retail field for 35 years and I know I am capable to sell retail items on my own websites and on some of the online auctions and stores. I don't seem to find too much in the United States either. Everything I searched for is either not here or it might be here and I could buy it cheaper on ebay anyway. Also I sent messages to about 6 different suppliers and heard nothing back. I hope it get better than this. Someone said I would be better off doing Affliate marketing but to me that is very confusing. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum Modularman,

Sorry to hear that you are having a hard time locating suitable dropshippers. May I ask what products you are interested? We can try to help you locate suitable suppliers.

We also have a number of wholesalers that offer their products at wholesale even if you decide to buy 1 item at a time. If you have at least $250 to spare we also have liquidators with great starter packs although it will depend greatly on the available stocks as well as the type of products you want to sell.

You have to remember that eBay has become more of a wholesale platform than retail. Plus it has become an extremely competitive marketplace so it's not uncommon to find products selling at prices the same as or lower than wholesaler. Lots of wholesalers sell on eBay directly to the public! Unfair yes, but its the reality.

What can you do about it?

* Order in bulk quantities to drive the wholesale price down
* Sell on another auction site other than eBay – there are heaps to choose from and profit margins are usually better. Craigslist is also a good place to sell if you live in the USA. (Let us know if you need more suggestions for places to sell online)
* Buy liquidation – this lets you get product for pennies on the dollar. (I’ll let you in on a secret, this is how lots of powersellers make money on eBay these days)
* Find a niche market with few competitors – collectibles and one-off items have amazing profit margins, even on eBay.

These days, you have to be pretty savvy to survive on eBay, so I hope we’ve given you some ideas.

Sing out if you have any other concerns - Cheers :)

Thanks for responding Richelle. Its not that I have any problem with Salehoo because I thinks it s a great place and has a lot of support. You certainly make me feel like you want us to succeed. I have been looking for camping products, small kitchen appliances, hobby items like electric trains sets and remote control items like cars, trucks, boats or planes, really nice handbags and any kind of radio product especially Fire and police scanners and shortwave. Im open to almost any idea that will make me some money. If you have any suggestions where to look or any input at all, it would be appreciated. Thanks

One of the links was somewhat helpful, however I sent emails 2 times now to about 7 other suppliers and have heard nothing in response. I also had contact with another a couple of times but he seems very reluctant to give me pricing on his products. I have to admit that I am considering asking for a refund because I am getting nothing out of this at the present time. I will try a little bit more but I don't have much hope of things getting much better.

Hi Jim,

We'll be more than willing to help you get in touch with these suppliers. Can you tell us which suppliers you are keen on using and we'll try to help get hold of them? The only reason I would think for supplier to become hesitant in giving out their wholesale pricing is if they assume that you're a competitor. Let me know who you need to establish contact with and we'll see what we can do. :)

Talk again soon. Kind regards..

Hello everyone! I am relatively new to Salehoo, I am from Monterrey, Mexico and I'm looking forward to become an experienced online retailer. I am starting with salehoo's advice from first timers and selling unwanted stuff from my home. It's going slow but I am not in hurry, I am looking this more as a learning experience before a upgrade in the online selling business

I've been looking for products to sell and I am interested in dropshipping fitness items from Texas into Mexico, I've already contacted a supplier but in order to open a dropshipping account with them they're asking me for Sales Tax # and a Federal ID# (EIN), do I need these things even if am not living in the US? Any help would be greatly aprreciated!

Cheers,

Alex

Hi Alex,

Welcome to SaleHoo!

If you live in the US or Canada, then you’ll find that wholesale suppliers in most US and some Canadian states will ask to see your sales tax ID or reseller permit when you apply to be one of their resellers. Now if you're outside the US or Canada, you won’t need to provide a sales tax ID when you order from a US supplier. But if the supplier asks for a sales tax ID, usually you just need to provide something equivalent in your country, Value Added Tax (VAT) registration, I think. If you haven't yet, check out our Education section -

Link hidden: Login to view

And I'm sure you'll find the SaleHoo User Manual helpful for getting tips on how to deal with suppliers. You can download your copy here -

Welcome Alex,

Great to have you with us!

There are also a number of suppliers that won't ask you for a sales tax and federal ID but having one (or the equivalent in your country) will give you more suppliers to choose from.

Cheers!

Thanks for your response. I have another question, I am trying to fill an application for dropshipping with rightway fitness however I am required to state the name of my company, will it hurt my chances of getting the application approved if I dont have an established company?

In other words, if am just starting off as an online seller what is the best move for me to get the approval from a dropshipper?

Regards,

Alex

Hi Alex,

I visited the site you mentioned - Rightway Fitness and it was not indicated that they're a strictly B2B type of supplier so I think you can still pursue your application provided you have all the necessary documents they require
[quote:7c23dd14]We require basic information about your business including State resale number, Federal ID, EIN or Social Security Number, etc.[quote:7c23dd14]

Since you still have no established company and may not have a company name yet, you can enter your name in the 'company name' slot for your application.

Good luck with your application! Hope everything works out :)

Hi flo240108, welcome to the site

Being cautious about selling online is actually a really good start right there. Nothing at all wrong with being careful, if more people were cautious when they first start we would have a lot less scammers making easy money of them!

There isn't anything about online trading that you can't learn here, we cover the lot, and a good place to start is to read the information in our education centre, then browse through the forum.

Anyone who has been involved in this game for any amount of time will tell you research is king, the more you learn, the more successful you can be.

Once you get yourself educated on the basics of online trading, then it's a good idea to tell us about the type of products you are interested in selling, the avenues you want to sell through and supply resource best suited to your situation.

The helpful customer support staff will then be in a good position to narrow down some possible supply avenues for you to look at, as well as provide advice on any area where you're not yet fully informed.

Great community spirit on our forum, we're all here to help. I'm not just talking about the support staff, but we have plenty of contributing members that are always happy to share their experience and hand out some good advice when you most need it : )

Hi flo240108,

Welcome to Salehoo :)

I would suggest downloading your pdf bonus guides in the Education section (under Guides). The guides will be a great help with your start off, especially our New User Manual - it has the basics about wholesale sourcing, like how to approach a supplier and virtually everything else you'll need to know.

To download please go to - Link hidden: Login to view

Like Marc said we have great community spirit on our forum so don't be shy - post questions if you've got one or need help with something. Also, take the time to explore the forum! You'll be amazed that the amount of information it has to offer.

Hope to see more of you on the forum, hopefully with a picture the next time!

Cheers :)

Hello Jimmy, Thanks for the welcome letter - very good advise. Back in the early days of eBay - my company was one of the big PowerSellers on eBay. However, the ever changing marketplace made it very difficult to make a profit. Things have really changed and Internet marketing strategies had to evolve in order to survive. As most experienced dealer know - the lowest price is not the always the winner and revenue does not pay the bills. Profit is KING. As a new supplier listed in your directory - we are confident that our dealer program will be profitable for your members. Thanks again for the excellent advise and customer service.

Hi Kent,

Really nice to read that your company will offer our members a profitable dealer program :)

Hope to see more of you on the forum, hopefully with a profile picture next time!

Cheers

I am new as well but need a clarification regarding a Resellers Id #.
I live in Michigan and will use a Dropshipper in another state, so does this mean that if someone in Michigan orders a product for me I charge them sales tax even though I don't personally have the products?

Welcome to SaleHoo Yesican25, great to have you here with us :)

Yes, you have to charge the sales tax even if the product is being dropshipped from another state. Since the customer bought it from you (a resident of Michigan) and not from your dropshipper (who's from out of state).

You might want to download a copy of our Dropship Handbook 2011, I'm sure you find the tips essential.

Also, check out this blog - Link hidden: Login to view

Hope this helps :)

Hi Yesican25, welcome to SaleHoo..... nice to have you on board with the rest of the crew : )

In regards to your question, it might be also worth mentioning that you need to be accurate with the item location information if you are selling on eBay. You need to ensure you list the actual location of the item you are drop shipping from if different from your own location.

Location misrepresentation is a BIG no no with eBay and can put your account in danger, especially if it's a new account.

Cheers

Hi! I'm Toby, I just joined. It's pretty cool there's a forum to discuss the business.

I've been selling a lot of returns on ebay and CL that I scored from liquidation.com and I'm about to start buying from new vendors.

I've been at this about a year now. Look forward to chatting on here with everyone!

Hi Syahmi and welcome to SaleHoo,

When you say it's not ideal, are you talking about soccer products themselves or Drop Shipping?

I can't personally see why soccer items wouldn't be good products to try, it would just come down to finding the right supplier really.

Hi Syahmi,

If you're selling on eBay, there are two ways to find out what is selling well:

1) Check out the popular searches and most popular products on eBay:

Popular searches: Link hidden: Login to view
Best selling products: Link hidden: Login to view
eBay pulse: Link hidden: Login to view

2) Perform completed listings searches for products or brand names to see the conversion rate and average selling price.

You can also, check out local trends on magazines, radio, tv and even on newspapers. When you notice something being mentioned repeatedly then you just found a trend.

Also, pay attention to conversations you have with your friends and neighbors, be attentive so you can pick-up clues too!

Your own shopping list may even help as well.

Hope this helps :)

Hello Salehoo friends,

I am new to this e-business thing and have recently purchased several items that were suggested from an online tutorial on how to sell on ebay and such. I invested in inkfrog, BANS, and Host Gator. I have the ability to create my own website as well as post on ebay rather easily. But after reading the first post and the "common myths," I now realize that I can potentially make more by not letting ebay and paypal nickel and dime what is deservingly mine. I respectfully ask advice from an "elder" in online business what should I do? Should I ditch everything ebay and try to make my own website that is my own store with a payment method that pays directly to my own bank account (trend?)? I would really appreciate a response from many members if possible. I thank you in advance :)

The thing to always remember about eBay is, there is no bigger online marketplace to sell your products on!

Now having said that, it means that while you have easy access to customers, you also have eBay's rules to abide by and plenty of competition to sell against.

Pros and cons on both sides of the argument whether to sell from your own site or from eBay, but my advice is for anyone just starting out selling is to start out with eBay. Use it to fine tune your market, then when you have some market experience and understand what it is your particular market responds to, then integrate your own website into your business model, but maintain your eBay presence, if only for marketing value for your own website.

By the way, on behalf of the staff and other members, welcome to SaleHoo : )

I see what you mean and that makes sense. But in terms of paypal, should I start trying to push things other than paypal? If so, then what do you suggest?

It's always a good idea to provide customers with a range of options for flexibility, however you will only be able to offer those payment options available to you through eBay.

I would suggest taking direct deposits, you can even make that option more appealing by offering a small discount for direct deposit payments, and still come out in front of PayPal fees.

Of course you will most likely find that most buyers will choose PayPal as it's a much safer payment option that depositing the money straight into your account, especially if you are a new seller.

In regards to PayPal, be aware that they are a law unto themselves. As a new seller you may be subject to having your account locked for a period of time, so try not to be too reliant on your PayPal funds or that can bring a new account undone very quickly.

fudjj,

Thank you so much for the info thus far and I am certain that I will continue to ask questions :). I have been reading the guides and I am trying to figure out what niche I want to get into. I know I love sports and can handle my own while playing them. I also enjoy electronics but I realize that both of these have many online retailers already. Should I look into more specific avenues like: Tennis?

Hi saturdaysbest,

Welcome to SaleHoo! Great to have you with us :)

A more specific niche may work well, but if you're just new I would still suggest starting out by selling unused stuff from around your home! This is still one of the best (if not the best) ways of experimenting and finding out which type of products may sell well for you.

If you need any further help, please don't hesitate to let us know. All the best! :)

Hello, I am new as of today. I've been selling on eBay for 12 years selling items from thrift stores, mostly vintage and mostly clothing. I wrote a book on the topic and am a blogger, blah blah blah.

I make fantastic profits. However I would like to add some wholesale items also so am looking forward to what I can find here.

Hello all =)

My name is Renee, I am from Australia and im a single mum of one adorable little girl. I have decided that i would love to start my own business from home of buying and selling handbags and wallets etc. i would love to sell in a party plan eventually once i have enough money behind me and good trustworthy authentic suppliers. at the moment i am just starting to by bulk lots of hot items that sell on internet shopping sites so i can make a profit and save for the good stuff. hopefully all goes to plan and within a couple of years i will have a fully functioning business of my own for my daughter and I.

This site is great.. but has so much on it.. does anyone have any ideas of where to start??

Renee =)

Hi WillowsMum,

Welcome to SaleHoo!

The first thing we suggest you do is decide what type of products you want to sell. Generally it's best to start selling something you are interested in because you are going to be spending a LOT of time thinking about it! Do you love fashion or movies? Perhaps you feel excited about the thought of new gadgets and technology? It's likely that there are plenty of other people who also share your interest - giving you an instant audience for your product. One idea is to jot down your interests and then make a list of products that are related to these interests (we recommend staying away from electronics to begin with as warranty issues can be complicated to manage).

Once you've thought of a couple of ideas, it's time to start researching suppliers. This is where SaleHoo comes in. Use the search box to look for the product(s) you want to sell. When you've found some suppliers who fit the bill, send them an email asking what the best possible price is that they can give you for the products you wish to buy. We can also assist you in looking for suppliers - just send us a message at support@salehoo.com or start a new thread here at the forum, or click on our profile names to send us private messages. :)

Click on 'Education' and read loads of very useful information to help you. :) And don't forget to download the PDF guides exclusive to SaleHoo members Link hidden: Login to view especially the #6 SaleHoo New User Manual :)

All the best!

Hi and welcome to our comminity, Anicee :)

Nice to have another hard working entrepreneur! I think many of our experienced members would say that nothing beats selling things from around your home especially if you are still working on your feedback.

Check through your closet or attic, your kitchen stockroom..there is bound to be something that you are longer using but still in good condition, use that and sell it on eBay :)

Why?

Selling things from around your home has little to no risk of loss, for one no capital was spent to secure the item.

Also, you get to practice and hone your selling skills - writing effective product titles and descriptions as well as taking photos!

You get to build your feedback while you save up capital for your big break!

All the best! Cheers :)

Greetings,

Just joined Salehoo to get information on starting up my online business properly. I have a strong technical ability but need some help with the business aspect. I am looking to dropship in my own online store. I know dropshipping is not the most profitable but in my situation I don't have the start up to buy in bulk. I have no idea what will sell either, I guess my fear is that I will buy thousands of dollars in product and will not be able to sell it. Either way I have a fair bit of research to do.

I plan to do this on a part time basis. I am building my own store using open source software. I have some photoshop experience and plan on designing my own logo, look and feel, and promotions. I already have some web hosting space and am using it to development my store.

So I am at the cross roads of what to sell and how to move that product. A few ideas came to mind but I don't know if they will sale. I tried to sell online before but was not successful. Hopefully changing what I'm selling and any pointers I can get from this site will help turning this around.

I am located in Ontario, Canada and plan to sell to either Canada, US or both. It all depends on what will work with my business.

Thanks,
Copperfrog

Welcome to SaleHoo Copperfrog :)

What to sell? is one of the TOP question we receive on the forum.

Personally, it will depend n your target market and location. Since what may sell in my area/target market may not necessarily sell at your end.

Here are some products we have found to have good profit margins:

- Clothing
- Skin care (e.g. anti-ageing & acne treatment)
- Vacation-related items (swimsuits, crocs, sunblock)
- Homewares (towels, sheets)
- Accessories for electronics
- Crafts & hobby items
- Sporting goods
- Computers & computer parts
- Auto & motorbike
- Unique items/collectibles

However, bear in mind that we give out this list to anyone who asks! It is always most profitable to come up with your own niche market.

One of the best ways of doing this is just by selling some stuff from around the house that you no longer need any more. In the process, you will often stumble across items that sell really well that you would never have otherwise picked!

Depends on the supplier, however if you are talking about Drop Shipping then the general rule is that they will ship almost anywhere, but again, that
s something you would need to make sure of with any particular supplier.

Hi JGoossens,

Welcome to SaleHoo, nice to have you with us :)

Like Marc said may depend but we do have suppliers (wholesalers, dropshipper, liquidators as well as manufacturers) that will readily ship to most locations worldwide including the UK.

We also have suppliers based in UK. Just let us know what products you are looking for so we can help you find suitable suppliers.

Cheers!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Tom, i'm a couple of weeks old as far as salehoo is concerned. So far I see there is lots to learn and I am organizing an outline of things to read in order so I can stay ontrack.

My first group of sales (outside the stuff I sold from home) will be in flea markets starting the end of this month. I am about to buy 3 wholesale lots of kitchen utensils from one of your suppliers. I couldn't believe that I could get so much for less than $100 dollars.

My next step after turning this $100 purchase into over $600 is to reinvest the money I make into my business so I can buy larger more profitable lots. I think this is a great way to get to finally selling on ebay if I want to. I will be moving to addoway before going to ebay though because I think other sites will teach me to market properly.

So my plan looks like this:
Sell products from around the house- COMPLETED
Research what sells at local flea markets or garage sales- COMPLETED
Check Prices-COMPLETED
Buy Wholesale Lots- In Process
Sell Lots at Fleamarkets or garage sales-
Use profits to buy larger lots-
Rinse and repeat

Move online after profit margin is over $700/Month
Addoway, Bonanza and so on Not EBAY Yet-
Create your own website

This will take as much as 6 months but your making money all the while.
You guys are the experts how does this plan look? How can I improve it? Please give me suggestions.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,

I must say you have a really well planned path for your business, good for you! :)

From me, I have nothing to suggest further except to continue what you are doing especially the research part . I think research will always play an integral part in your success whether you are selling online or offline.

Just one thing, if you cannot achieve a step in the time frame you have planned to don't get frustrated but take it as a challenge and keep at it!

Do update us how your 6 month plan works out.

All the best :)

Frankly Tom, that looks like a better plan than 90% of the people who try this business use (look for iPads, find none, send money to random Pakistani who claims to have iPads, get ripped off, accuse whole industry of being scam artists, move on to next daft idea to get rich, etc.)

Afternoon,
After reviewing Tom’s plan I was curious about how mine would work out. I don’t have plans on ever going to eBay, therefore I’m skipping sell stuff around the house. I am pretty good at getting an online store up using my own development skills and open source software. I have done it for others on contracts and thought “hey why am I not doing this”? My plan is as follows.

1.Do a fair amount of research to find a niche.
2.Secure a drop shipper.
3.Get domain and build online store.
4.Populate store with product.
5.For the next while optimize site and modify product accordingly
6.If site sells then think about wholesale lots or liquidated stock of same or similar product.
7.If not then change niche and start again @ #1.

My goal is to make $1000/month if more than great. I just need something that my wife can handle as a stay at home mom. Is this realistic or is my plan doomed by everyone else does this and fails.
Thanks,
Copperfrog

Hi Copperfrog,

I think you plan is quite doable especially as you have technical background to help you achieve the techy part.

I think its really nice of you to set this up for you wife :)

Just persevere and fr sure you'll get there! Might be best to involve your wife as early as now so she knows the whereabouts of online selling (if she doesn't already).

Cheers!

Hi Guys

My name's Mel from the UK and I'm brand new to Salehoo, (just joined last week), and this is my first trip to the forum.

It looks very lively and I'm sure over time I'll pick up some great advice from the folks on here.

I am currently selling on eBay UK, and struggling to make any profit :(. I have heard people say Amazon is better, ie; higher prices paid for products, less hassle with awkward buyers etc, but their sellers fees seem extortionate !!

However, if anyone on here is an Amazon expert seller, I would sure welcome any advice from you.

Also if anyone knows of any good wholesale suppliers for Aromatherapy & Metaphysical products, I would appreciate some reliable contacts.

Cheers

Hi Richelle

Thanks for the links to the Amazon & Aromatherapy stuff - it's very much appreciated.

I'm a little new to forums so you will all have to bear with me a while until I find my feet around here, but I'm really excited about the journey ahead.

I will try to post as often as I can, but I'm extremely busy at the minute, (as I'm sure is everyone else here), trying to set up an offline market stall to sell my products, as well as eBay, eBid etc.

Incidentally, while reading through some other posts I came across 2 more sites that I was unaware of - Bonanza and Special Auctions, so I have signed up with both of these also - thanks guys.

I will try to get some stuff listed on these 2 sites soon and will let everybody at Salehoo forum know how it goes.
