Depends on what you are importing for example if you import clothing you are looking at 17.5% import tax PLUS 10% gst. This is what I was advised over the phone by customs. If you keep below $1K for clothing there is no tax payable.

Hope this helps.

Assuming a customer orders an item which costs in excess of $1k from my online store (an item which would normally atract duty) and the item is dropshipped directly to the customer, who is responsible for the import tax and gst?
Can someone plse advise!

you should go to:

Link hidden: Login to view

postage to Australia is excluded from the customs value

however, inland freight & insurance incurred by the purchaser prior to the goods leaving the 'place of export' are included in the customs value of the goods.

how they work out what is the inland cost & what is the cost to Australia - i have no idea?????

Hi guys,

You only pay customs duties for the cost of the products you have bought in AUD. So for example, if you were to import clothing, which had costs you $1500AUD, according to Australian Customs, you pay 17.5% of the $1500AUD. This is the FOB quote (normally), you only pay the 10% GST for freight, IF YOU WERE TO USE YOUR FREIGHT ACCOUNT HERE N AUSTRALIA AS IT CARRIES A GST PORTION. If you were to be importing on a CIF agreement with your supplier (Cost, Insurance and Freight), then you just pay for the FOB portion of the CIF. I hope that answers your question.
