Although, I'm not into selling and advertising these days (I mean personally), I have researched and read various ways that have been repeated suggested by writers/online experts for sellers to you when advertising to increase traffic to one's store (or listing). Below are 2010's top 10 trends for online advertising. (Please note that these are not listed as in an hierarchical order)

Trend #1: Search Engine Optimization - You can try out our very own Traffic Travis and take your Market Research, SEO and PPC campaigns to a whole new level to down load for free please go to: Link hidden: Login to view

Trend #2: Paid Search

Trend #3: E-mail Marketing

Trend #4: Social Network Marketing - Has always been a topic or a number of discussions, whether it will pay-off. For me personally, it's worth a try specially since this method is totally free all you have to do is open an account on Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn and other similar sites, maintain the account and keep it updated. Be sure to answer any messages left by prospects as this will often reflect the type of service you provide as a seller.

Trend #5: Blogging - Also a great way of drawing attention/traffic

Trend #6: Web Presence

Trend #7: Mobile Marketing - Growing trend, even big and established businesses are going Mobile these days!

Trend #8: Podcasting and Online Radio

Trend #9: Online Video - You can do this on your own, make your own video and you can post it on youtube. More than a handful of people go to youtube daily.

Trend #10: Coupons, Discounts and Savings - This ia another great way of attracting new customers as well as old customers. Everybody is always in constant search for a freebie or a discount.

To read more about these trends, please visit this link:

Another thing you can try is joining online forums - try to contribute in posts that you are familiar with. Just make sure to include your Store's name and URL in your signature area - that way the forum contributors can visit your store or know where to find you.

Here are other articles that may help too:

Write a press release about anything going on in your business and submit it to free press release directories. It can guarantee a boost in web traffic to your site and can help increase your page ranking. =)

Cheers!

You may also want to try posting ads on free online directories such as Link hidden: Login to view - you can create an ad for free which you can later on update to a paid one for more exposure. I suggest you try out the free ad first and see how it goes before signing up for a paid ad.

Cheers!

LISTING TIP:
What i do.. is use ALL CAPS on my TITLE, it beats buying the BOLD feature and your listing will STAND OUT FROM THE REST without having to buy the bold feature.

I know alot of people say listing items with all caps is bad, but hey it worked for me quite well.

Hi SOS,

Everyone is allowed to post links that are considered helpful but must not be either of the following:

- Links to wholesale suppliers we haven't verified, where the person posting the link owns the company.

- And spammy links that are irrelevant to the thread and/or forum

Hope this helps :)

Here is an idea from left field in regards to cheap advertising. Do you have a local community radio or television station in your area?

You may well be pleasantly surprised at just how cost effective advertising on these types of avenues can be. Now they may well not have a massive volume of listeners/watchers, but the adverting rates are usually extremely attractive.

I'll use my local community television station here in Brisbane as an example, but you can screen your own 30 minute show on Bris31 for 200 dollars. That's screening time, you have to of course produce it. Of course that's for your own show, now I don't actually have any advertising rates from them, but it follows that their advertising would be close to the same mark.

You don't need to do any filming to produce an advert, it can be a slide presentation done in something like powerpoint, a voice backing sound track, and perhaps even a voice over, and you can be advertising on local TV, even easier for local radio.

Yale a look, see what community media avenues are open to you in your area, then take a look at their shows and see if there is something that you feel would be a good fit to sponsor some advertising space on.

I posted a link on a guy,who wrote a book and gave away free 200.00 in advertising.
I do not own the website, nor am I affiliated with the website. I do not know the man who wrote the book, I bought 3 of his books and have yet to open them and read them, I just wanted the advertising coupon for bing.

I advertise on bing via pay per click ads every single day, I purchased a book and received$200.00 in free pay per clicks from bing.

Now what part about that is hard to understand?
Maybe you guys should have asked what I was speaking of prior to you sending the CIA or the Mob Police after me.

I sell Girdles and I am looking for a supplier to supply me with more girdles. That is why I came back to the site. I do not sell books, nor do I know anyone who has ever written a book!
I am very offended at the way your staff trailed after me.
You should apologize, because you were wrong…3-4 times.
I came back to the site to find one thing, as I was searching, I read ISO post by others, and thus I posted info…period!
ISO means In Search Of.
I was accused for using that word as well.

Good Day.

Hi SOS,

I'm very sorry we've offended you by editing the links in your posts.
Unfortunately we do get quite a few people joining the forum just to post links to their own websites/stuff they are promoting etc, and because we have to be so vigilant, at times our moderating may be a little over zealous!

We have a number of staff and moderators working on the forum, and they were just following the rules we have set down. I've let them know that your intentions were honorable so this shouldn't happen again :)

Feel free to send me a private message if you have any questions.

Cheers,
Grace

I recently opened an ebay store and I am also lookig to generate traffic to my store. This is what I came up with. There are hundreds of local classified websites ads in many regions and most are free. For example, ebay's affiliate www.kijiji.com, www.kijiji.ca or even ebay classifieds, are all good places to advertise. As these sites are local you can advertise in many different cities. Advertising is free... Let's get some visibility.

Thanks.

Submitting your website and/or eBay Store/Seller List to directories and vertical portals can be extremely helpful.

In addition, writing articles relevant to your products and submitting them to article writing websites like ezinearticles.com is another great way to market your online business.

Did you know you can promote your eBay store on Amazon? The latest blog by the eBaysellingcoach taught me this neat trick!

All you have to do write reviews of products related to the products you are selling on eBay but make sure you mention your eBay store link in your Amazon profile :)

Great info as usual.

Here is another back door way to get free advertising.
Join eCrater for free.
Then list a bunch of your stuff on there.
On their store help page they give various ways to list on Google and other advertising methods.
Simply follow their step by step approach and get a lot of free advertising.
On each item listing you can also list your website or even ebay site as a link.

Another thing one can do is transfer all of their eBay listings onto eCrater then get ebay advertising and ecrater advertising.

When you get a sale on ecrater you get an email telling you.

Sounds like a bunch of great ideas. I thought about linking my personal blog with my online store & useing eBay as advertising as well (perhaps using Bonanzle & Addoway in the mix for one or two items to hopefully cover even more revenues of traffic). At one point I thought about getting a car magnet w/ vistaprint (they have some pretty cheap stuff/good deals) but thought against using my vehicle in that manner. I have gone as far as to make a few coffee mugs, pens, etc. to give away or send as a thankyou special offer kinda deal. I found a place at one point that will put your info/website on pens and they are pretty cheap-Everyone uses a pen-I know they did in the military so just 'drop' a few here and there and see how it goes...those aren't free ideas but I think to a degree a little cheap. :) Maybe you can get other ideas from those ideas :) good luck!

Hi stellarvu,

That's a great way to start! Plus you don't have to worry about cross border shipping or custom fees.

eBid has a UK site - Link hidden: Login to view you can try checking it out and see if it will suit your needs as a seller.

Also I found this list on Google, it's a list to various UK online auction sites -

Hi lbbonner,

I just read your message when I browsed through the thread :) Thanks for your warm wishes, we did have a good and safe time during the holidays, hope you did too!

ibuildstar.com is actually a directory of suppliers, might be similar to SaleHoo but I just wouldn't know since I have not used them myself. They have been online since 2002, but I guess they're not that popular - First time I learned about them is from your post.

Here are a couple of thread from another forum that discusses ibuildstar.com -

I notice that my storefront on Salehoo is easy to access on Google & Bing. However Addoway comes up on google, but only shows specific items & not the storefront listing.

There are many different ways to advertise free on the internet. I have personally used many different methods myself and have had success with most of them.

The fastest growing way is social media marketing. To the right person, the use of such tools as Twitter and Facebook can be the biggest source traffic comes from. Promoting whatever company you have, or whatever product your selling on Facebook can make a big difference. The trick though, is to not annoy people with spam. Instead providing incentives that are not too bombarding to sell your products or promote your company.

I have also found blogging to be particularly useful. If you have a particular niche market you are in, or a specific product(s) you are selling, starting a blog can help. Talking about trends in the market, useful tips, etc. can give you the extra traffic you need if you play it right. Networking in blogging is a big part of it. An example would be a tech blog, where you talk about different products, compare them to others, give tips or tricks in tech, and subscribe and comment on other blogs. The more active you are, the more interest you can build.

There are also many different websites who will let you post ads free on them and cycle through them daily. I have found this useful, even though the traffic is not targeted traffic. It still means more sales can be made. If you are on a tight budget, this is definitely a useful tool. There are also targeted niche sites you can post ads for free in exchange for posting their ads on your site.

There is also the e-mail marketing strategy. Sending out newsletters, special offers, etc. to people's emails can bring very good revenue. Though are many people who these types of emails as spam, there are still many people who will take the time to read them.

And two of my favorite types of marketing are video marketing on YouTube and posting and commenting in forums related to your niche product or service. Posting videos on YouTube can be very effective if you are persistent, creative, and honest. Forums play out the same way. And the more active you are in each, the better chance of a higher number of sales.

Also, submitting articles and press releases to sites that could publish them on their site, in their newsletter, or wherever can bring a very high number of people to your site.

These are very general explanations, but they are effective if you use them right. If you, or anyone has questions about any of these please feel free to message me. I would be happy to help in any way I can.

Most of the free advertising, or free software have a catch. They give you a free trial and then if you want to go pro, they charge you a monthly or yearly fee.
Then you are stuck with software that you don't even know how to work or what to do with it.
For me what it has work the best, is to outsource jobs that I'm not good at it. Instead put a small budget a side for advertising and then you can outsource it.
You can check out the following sites, where you can hire help at very low cost, the subscription is for free and you can set your butget to only how much you want to spend.

Hello and welcome mariooobva,

Yes some sites are like that, however you can always opt out when they start asking you to sign up. While others are truly for free.

Thanks for sharing :)

One more neat trick to generate traffic to your website from eBay is to create an About Me page in your eBay account and include a link back to your website. This is the only place eBay will allow a link back to your site.

Of course you will need to create a few auctions so buyers can click on the About Me icon next to your auctions to see your page.

I am looking to open my own webstore soon and am comparing the sites. I will definately look at using eCrater as mentioned here, but with eCrater being free, is there a need to pay for a webstore? Is their free one good enough to use as my main webstore? I am afraid of getting what a I pay for and it's free, so I would be afraid it lacks what I might get through Salehoo Stores or another ecommerce paid service.
Thanks!

Hello stuckeytabitha,

I think just the same with any site, with effort comes results. You might find this SaleHoo review about eCrater and selling there, helpful - Link hidden: Login to view

Selling success will take time and effort. I guess you might say that this is the cost of selling your items on a free store; your time and energy. As I mentioned above, eCrater is growing rapidly. With their visitor numbers growing nearly 30% in the last three months, sellers are encouraged to start listing a few items on eCrater now, to help be part of its growing success.

For an unbiased point of view, I also found a 3rd party review for you - Link hidden: Login to view

Hope this helps!

You guys can check out this site. Just a few months old and doing very good with banner ads. Here are some stats to think about:

Alexa Ranking: 2330
Average Pageviews Per Day: 2243992
Average Daily Unique Users: 260398
Alexa Ranking Yesterday: 1,002

Not free but very affordable.Banner ads start as low as $12 for 1 day (super amount of exposures)

Advertisers reporting GREATER results than normal.

Even better results with the 728x90 banner ads. Once you try it, you'll love it so much you might find yourself doing it again and again !!

One thing we've learned about doing this,

nothing is cheap, you either have time or money to do it. Although, don't discount your time. Many people don't value their time, and lose money on doing free or "cheap" marketing.

Of course using paid methods may have higher chances of reaping more traffic but for new sellers advertising using the free methods suggested, it would be a big help than not advertising at all because there is no budget for it just yet.

Cheers!
