I'm new to the e-biz world. I was wondering, if anyone knows:

1. I know some people sell some things on eBay and are just individuals. But if I wanted to started a e-commerce business, say, on Shopify, do I need to register a business with the local government? Or can I run the biz as an individual?
2. I heard somewhere, not sure if it is true, that wholesellers will only do biz with businesses and not individuals...any truth to this?

Thanks!

Hi Leon and welcome to the forum,

Plenty of people trade online without having a registered business, but you always have to be aware of any tax liabilities that may be applicable. Regarding suppliers, as a general rule, wholesaler's certainly won't deal with a non-business entity and while some dropshippers will, it is becoming common place for them to also require a tax id to open accounts also.

So yes, possible to trade as you are, but it does limit your supply resources to a degree.

Cheers

Hi Trong,

Registering a business to sell online will be a personal choice for you, it might be something you want to consider for your own tax purposes in Vietnam, but it's not a requirement to start selling online, especially dropshipping. You may find some suppliers that do require a tax ID to open an account, that would be an issue without being registered, however that is mosty something wholesalers will require.

So if you find a supplier that does require a tax ID to open an account with them, then having a local Vietnamese tax ID will be the only way around that.

Cheers
