If only it was that easy lol

Depending on the market and the product, profit can be up and down, so it can be very hard to pick a product that is going to perform exactly the same week in and week out.

As for the most popular items, they will be the most competitive to sell and return the least amount of profit due to the competitive market. To make money from the hottest selling items, you really have to buy in large volume to get the best possible price, then sell at a seriously reduced margin to ensure you remain competitive.

Money from these types of products are made from volume sales, not from individual sales.

Does SaleHoo have suppliers for these types of products, absolutely, but it's up to you to research your market so you know exactly what products are right for you to sell and what you need to do to give yourself the best possible chance of competing successfully !

Really hard to recommend at the best of times as markets can change over night.

What you need to do firstly is decide on your business model, for example wholesale, liquidation, drop shipping and so on. Different models suit different types of products and markets.

For example, with drop shipping business model as your primary model, I wouldn't suggest mainstream tech products. This is a fast moving market, plenty of buyers for sure, but that means it's super competitive, and a drop shipping business simply won't deliver you the purchasing power required to successfully compete.

Have a serious thought about your business model, then you will be far better placed to find what products will work within that model and your market.

Another thought

Often the profit is not made in the first sale of a product or service.
In this aspect you have many people who sell at cost or below cost
on EBAY just to get a customer into the sales funnel.

Sales Funnel? Your own website or email buyers list. Once you have a customer you build a relationship to sell them other products and services over the life of the customer. Many people think that the money is made on the first sale but this is not the case. You got to evaluate the revenue potential of the customer you acquire for life.

Nice point from WJ,

Creating a sales funnel is a well proven marketing technique, and one that is used to good effect by many online sellers.

What WJ has highlighted there for you is getting started is only the very first step, it then takes a lot of work developing these types of strategies and implementing them successfully to ensure you can grow your business, and ultimately build success upon them.

I know nothing about sales tunnels, I have not got a website selling things, maybe a possibility but, I think you need to start looking at seasonable items, bit late to start selling heaters but with summer on our doorsteps, what about swimsuits etc??

Just to highlight TopSales point of seasonal items, if that is an avenue you are interested in, my tip would be to ensure you start selling around 3 months out from the season change.

Not everyone waits for the change of season to by things such as swimsuits, etc, and you can miss sales if you aren't in the market early!

what kind of business is suitable for drop shipping?

Hi alexyes,

From the tips I gathered from Marc, Wholesalejoe and TOpSales, I would say just about anything, but for a beginner it would be best you avoid dropshipping electronic products.

I suggest doing the needed research to be able to determine which products will sell best for you and your chosen market, like Marc said trends/markets can change overnight and what may work for me may not necessarily work for you.

If you haven't really started sourcing from a supplier, might as well try selling things from around your home. Many successful online entrepreneurs started out this way. This might not be the best and fastest way to earn high profits but this will definitely give you the chance to experiment. For example you can try listing on various sites or you get to list various types of products and see which site/product works best for you.

You can also tap into your hobbies and interest for possible product ideas. There is a growing number of hobbyist that continually search for the parts/products they need to foster their collections or hobbies.

Here are some products we have found to have good profit margins:

- Clothing
- Skin care (e.g. anti-ageing & acne treatment)
- Vacation-related items (swimsuits, crocs, sunblock)
- Homewares (towels, sheets)
- Accessories for electronics
- Crafts & hobby items
- Sporting goods
- Computers & computer parts
- Auto & motorbike
- Unique items/collectibles

Hope this helps :)

Question one, to answer that with 100% is near enough to impossible. The products you mentioned might work well, they might not, it is dependent on many factors.

The market you are selling into, the market economy, the price, your competition and so on. This is where some serious research and some level of test marketing comes into play.

These practical things will give you the data that you base building your business around.

In regards to what the most demanded in the market would be, it's probably safe to say that the well known brands are usually going to be the most popular, but again, it always comes down to determining market factors such as price and so on.

In regards to avoiding electronic accessories, it's a market that stays relevantly solid through thick and thin, so maybe one you should look at a little more closely.

"What kind of craft and hobby items?", that one is a decision you would have to make, based on doing your market research.

Sporting goods, I'm no expert in this field of product, however if we are talking about eBay here as your selling platform, brand names at the right prices are always a good idea, but I think in this genre in general, price may well be the determining factor for buyers.

All of your questions really do relate back to good old fashioned market research in the beginning, then advancing what you have learned during that process into the next phase, test marketing.

Those two processes can take a long time to ensure they are done correctly, but if done correctly, can provide a very solid foundation to build an online sales business upon.
