Everyone wants to get on the first page of an items listing on eBay, right?

Well, I will let you in on a little secret that many do not know about but one which is completely free and offered by eBay themselves.

If this has been posted before simply disregard, but I have not seen a post about this.

EBay uses a best match system based on keywords.

What if I told you that eBay offers all sellers a free listing tool which gives the best keywords to use in ones description for the item one is selling.
That's right! Free and available to you right now.

EBay will also tell one which categories are the best to list in for each item.

I tested it out this week. I listed several items. One of them being an old MP3 player. Not an Ipod. After two days of a five day listing I had almost 50 hits and 2 bids.

I listed a cigar box and in 2 days had 38 hits and 3 watchers.

Other items I listed had similar responses.

Ok now that I have teased you a little, here is the link.

Simply type your item in the field provided and you will be taken to a page
which will give you a list of popular names. Choose the one with the biggest green dot.
This now takes one to another page which will show one the most liked and disliked keywords. Go through all the keywords and choose the ones which match your item and have the biggest green dot.

As one chooses each keyword one will find another box that asks you where in the listing title you would like to place the word.

Make sure to fill up the listing title with as many words as one can.

Presto. One now has a listing title with the best keywords possible for ones item.

Now copy and past that into your title bar in the sell section of eBay.

Great find, planes!

I've used this page many times to help me fill up my titles with the best keywords, and I often give it out to clients.

I would, however, like to clarify a couple of things from your post:

First, this page, while extremely helpful, is not a listing tool. A listing tool is a program or website you can use to create your entire eBay listing or at least your entire item description. Instead, this would be considered a keyword or market research tool.

Secondly, although eBay's default Best Match search sort is based PARTLY on keywords, it is also based on many other factors, including seller performance and reputation (feedback, time on site, DSRs, disputes), pricing, format, category, shipping cost, etc.

Good corrections Erika. To be expected from a former eBay Employee and top seller manager.

Another interesting thing to question to touch on what planes was saying. How about when you use that import listings on other selling sites? like you know when you click to import listings from ebay to the other sites...if you go into your seller preferences you can see all the sites that are linked to your ebay account. I wonder if ebay is monitoring when they see your taking your listings to those sites if that will also effect your exposure on the site?

Definitely a good question there, dwmgoods! And now, I wonder too just like you. Especially since eBay is known to monitor site activity of its members, do they actually monitor this as well?

:)
