What is a Private Label?

Can someone in the apparel industry tell me what Private Label is, and how it can help a small retailer like myself.
I do understand from my research that the demand is high.

Private label garments are typically provided by one company for offer under another company's brand name, so this would be an option if you were looking to develop your own branding perhaps.

At least that's my understanding of the term, although I'm a long way from being an expert in this field lol

By definition, fudjj's idea of what a private label is quite right!

How it may help you? For starters, if you are a business newbie many big name stores would not want to stock your products, likewise consumers will not be quite convinced about it either.

If for example you have a product (lets say something you came up with) and would want to market it, then that's where private branding/labeling comes in. Private branding will help get shelf space for your products and give you a chance to grow...
