5 Best eCommerce Blogs for Beginners

The following blog post is a guest post by freelance writer, Carrie Lamkin.

Beginning an online business can be daunting for even the most intrepid of entrepreneurs. Even if you have experience with an online marketplace like eBay, launching your own eCommerce store can come with a host of challenges, all of which you’ll need to be prepared to meet if you hope to be successful. The beauty of the Internet is that it’s open for business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—both for your customers and for you, as you capitalize on the resources that will help you transform your business from small potatoes to smashing success.

Subscribing to the best eCommerce blogs is an easy and inexpensive way to immediately improve your understanding of the eCommerce world. Taking a few minutes each day or each week to read suggestions from marketing to software development can help you elevate your business to the next level—without stretching your initial budget to its limits.

Here you’ll find a list of a few of our favorite eCommerce blogs for beginners, all aimed at developing your understanding of a different facet of this dynamic and unique business environment.

Get Elastic

Get Elastic is literally the best eCommerce blog on the Internet, boasting the biggest subscriber list of any blog in its field. You can think of Get Elastic as your encyclopedia of eCommerce tips and tricks, covering everything from telecom to retail. Articles cover everything from tips for getting started in the eCommerce business to features like “Infographic Friday,” which visually tell a story about eCommerce.

This blog tends towards the technical, so don’t be overwhelmed. The benefit of Get Elastic’s expansive audience is that you can find virtually anything and everything you could possibly want to know in the archives. If you’re intimidated by that, don’t be. Use it as a resource, and until you feel completely comfortable, stick with the articles that work for you and file the rest away like you would a textbook on your shelf.

Groove Commerce

Groove Commerce’s blog is an extension of their commercial site, which focuses on selling design, development and marketing help to businesses. Knowing that upfront will help you see the content for its true intent—to draw in readers and to keep them there long enough to sell them on their services. Don’t be afraid of this—it can actually work to your benefit.

One of the elements that makes the Groove Commerce blog one of the best blogs for beginners is its approach. The articles are incredibly accessible and easy to read. It’s clear that their audience is primarily eCommerce newcomers because these are the folks who are most likely to be looking for a firm like theirs. Thus, the blog can teach you a lot that will benefit your business during its initial stages, making Groove Commerce one of the best eCommerce blogs for the frugal businessperson. Use them for all the free advice you can get!

What this means, in practice, is that you’ll find articles focused on clear explanations about Facebook marketing trends, Gmail tags, site strategy, and preparing for Cyber Monday, among other things. Groove Commerce also offers free webinars that you can participate in live or review once the recording is posted.

Shopify Blog

We nominated this blog to our list of best eCommerce blogs because of its absolute dedication to beginning eCommerce business owners. The Shopify blog is another blog that is associated with a commercial site, built on the back of their eCommerce software and online store builder business. The gold mine of information here makes this one of the best eCommerce blogs for you. Shopify makes it easy to access clear, insightful information about how to build a better eCommerce site, either on the site itself or through its subscription email service.

The Shopify blog has an indexed sidebar with topics like “How to Start a Business,” “How to Sell Online" and “Ecommerce Trends.” Click on one and you’ll be diving into a crash course in eCommerce domination, available any time you need it. Looking for more? Shopify also offers a “Learning Center” that includes eBooks available for download. Think you might benefit from a title like The Ultimate Guide to Dropshipping? Shopify has it for you, for free. The wealth of information here makes it simply one of the best eCommerce blogs we have encountered.

Practical Ecommerce

Practical Ecommerce is half newspaper, half blog, with a focus on embodying its name—practical tips for your eCommerce site. This hybrid approach makes it one of the most unique offerings on our list of the best eCommerce blogs, but perhaps one of the most engaging. The blog offers solid advice on how to utilize online resources, including the ever-present top ten lists, and offers archived information broken into easy topics like Marketing, Conversion, or Search Engines.

The regular columns in Practical Ecommerce, written by experts in the field, are uniquely engaging. You might enjoy The (Ecommerce) Corner Office which is written by entrepreneurs in the eCommerce field, as they share their hands-on experiences. Reading another eCommerce business owner’s experiences and wisdom is, for some, more beneficial than abstract research or trends—and that makes this one of the best eCommerce blogs for new business owners.

Social Media Examiner

Hmm it seems like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I'll just sum it up what I submitted and say, I'm thoroughly enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I'm still new to the whole thing. Do you have any recommendations for inexperienced blog writers? I'd definitely appreciate it. Reply
Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and all. Nevertheless think about if you added some great photos or video clips to give your posts more, "pop"! Your content is excellent but with images and videos, this blog could certainly be one of the most beneficial in its field. Amazing blog! Reply
