Survival Kits - Monday Market of the Week

Whether you’re at home, on the road or out in the wilderness, you never know when an emergency will arise, hence why emergency kits are so popular among online shoppers.

With the help of our very own SaleHoo Research Lab, let’s look further into how well survival kits survive online (see what I did there?).

Sell-through Rate: Did you really find a hot niche?

In October of 2012 the sell-through rate of survivals kits was 76.33%, clearly showing that we have indeed found a niche!

Median End Price: Is there enough room for profit?

Looking at the relatively low median end price you might think otherwise about the profitability of survival kits. But you have to remember that the median end price on eBay can be ambiguous because it is for all listings of survival kits which can include bulk listings that sell two or more units of survival kits in a single listing. Plus you have to consider that survival kits come in different sizes and types. These factors can skew our data.

To give you a more encouraging and realistic figure you can refer to the lab’s snapshot feature which provides us the average price on eBay. Looking at the screen shot below you can see that the figures shown definitely look more encouraging!

Total Listings, Total Bids and Total Sellers: How viable is your market?

Check out the total number of bids compared to the total number of listings for survival kits! As of last month there were 9,989 bids placed while there were only 1,859 listings on eBay – imagine the potential market for this niche!

Data Trends: Are sellers hitting their target?

By looking at the table above it’s quite easy to see just how well survival kits are doing on a daily basis on eBay. Notice that there is only one day out of 30 where the total revenue went below $300.

Are you now starting to seriously consider selling survival kits? I know I am!

Going beyond eBay: How popular are survival kits online?

Now let’s see just how often survival kits are being search for. To do this, we refer to our trusty free SEO software, Traffic Travis. You can download your own Traffic Travis software by visiting www.traffictravis.com.

What do these numbers mean?

There has been a steady increase in the demand for survival kits as well as a rise in the importance of being well prepared. The increase in demand can be seen in the search count results. Currently there are 8,100 searches globally and 6,600 searches are made with the US for survival kits. While there are higher search counts for survival kit  both are essentially just the same product.

Based on the results above you can easily see that using the right keywords is very important in driving traffic to your online store and eBay listings.

Hello Dale, Usually you just need to provide something equivalent in your country, for example your VAT registration in the EU or the UK, or your ABN or GST registration in Australia and New Zealand. You must register for GST if you carry out a taxable activity and if your turnover was over $60,000 for the last 12 months, or is expected to go over $60,000 for the next 12 months (This equates to $5,000 per month. If your turnover is $5,000 per month and you expect to maintain that level all year, you'll need to register for GST.), or was less than $60,000, but you include GST in your prices, for example taxi drivers who have included 15% in their taxi fares. Hope this helps! Reply

Hello pfanelli, I agree there may be many sellers listing or selling in this market but the current demand is roughly 5 times that of the current number of listings, so if your list your products correctly using optimized keywords and offering the best value to customers then you still have a big chance at a landing a sale/s. Plus it is a rising trend - disaster/emergency preparedness so the market definitely has a lot of room for growth! Cheers :) Reply
