Vintage Halloween Costumes - Monday Market of the Week

While brainstorming for today’s Market of the Week, I caught myself staring at the calendar and noticed that it’s nearly Halloween and decided that I would look into a Halloween-costumes this for this week’s market. To check whether 'Halloween costumes' is a good product choice, I consulted SaleHoo’s Research Lab.

At first glance, the hotness scale easily convinced me. Hotness is a measure of the prominence of the particular keyword on eBay, and the internet in general. It measures the popularity of a particular word from various sources including the potential from our revolutionary Auction Inspector software, the number of current eBay listings, the frequency of searches in Google, and number of results in Google. The hotter the keyword, the larger the market is for products in that niche.

Note: The only problem with a large market is that it usually means high competition. Remember to always balance demand with competition which I will cover in the next two sections.

As I checked for the demand and the current number of auctions I immediately had second thoughts – with only 18 requests among 180,643 auctions, who wouldn’t?

The Research Lab not only provides us with data on how a product stands in the market, it also suggests related products and as I clicked through each one, vintage Halloween costumes definitely caught my attention.

Currently there are only 1,273 active auctions with at least 126 requests on eBay’s (US) ‘Want It Now’ section. This definitely looks more promising!

With in depth research, here’s what I found out about vintage Halloween costumes

DEMAND

When customers request for a certain product this means there is a current need to supply the market with the product being requested for. Always make sure you are selling products that are in demand or being requested by customers, the higher the demand the better.

Using SaleHoo’s Research Lab I pulled up the current statistics for the market demand for vintage Halloween costumes.

Based on the screen shot above, vintage Halloween costumes are in high demand.  There are currently 119 requests for vintage Halloween costumes on eBay US, 79 requests in the UK and 39 in Australia.

The overall demand rating is calculated based on the ratio between the wanted requests and the current number of listings. So using this factor you can see that vintage Halloween costumes are highly sought after in three major eBay sites - US, UK and Australia.

COMPETITION

As an online entrepreneur, you can measure competition as the number of sellers selling the same products as you. The lower your competition the better your chances of making consistent sales and as mentioned before, too much competition means the market is no longer viable.

Now let’s go back to SaleHoo Research Labs and check how many sellers are selling vintage Halloween costumes on eBay. If you look at the screen shot below, you’ll notice that on all four eBay sites the competition is set at “very low” which means not too many sellers are selling this product.

There are 1,271 listings on eBay US, 101 in the UK, 891 in Canada and 127 on eBay Australia – These are the current auctions or the total number of listings for vintage Halloween costumes on each eBay site.

When we put together the data we collected from the Demand and Competition sections of our trusty Research Lab, you’ll see just how promising the market is for vintage Halloween costumes. For example, in eBay UK there are only 101 listings with at least 79! In my book this would definitely make vintage Halloween costumes a good niche to invest on.

Take Your Research Beyond eBay

Learn how many people are searching for vintage Halloween costumes on Google, Yahoo and Bing. Let Traffic Travis help you determine the best the keyword to use to boost the amount of traffic to your online store or eBay listing! Visit www.traffictravis.com and download your free seo software.

Traffic Travis’ Research Tool shows us that the keyword ‘Vintage Halloween costumes’ has a Global Count and US Count of 720 each.

What does this mean?

In a month there are at least 720 searches for vintage Halloween costumes worldwide and another 720 searches for the same term in the US as well.

For comparative purposes I have included ‘halloween costumes’ in our keyword search and the results are amazingly higher!

With at least 1,823,000 search results globally and locally (US) combined. This is probably one of the reasons why there are over 100,000 active auctions on eBay for Halloween costumes than there are for vintage Halloween costumes.

Note: The number of searches made on Google may not always translate to actual sales on eBay or other sites.

Again always remember that market and product research are the key elements to finding a good product before you consider selling online.

Hi Alice, It's really interesting topic of Monday Market of the Week. Do more practice on searching would be better and get more experience. I am a little bit confused about the keyword searching via Traffic Travis. Refers to the example of "vintage Halloween costumes"; how come it would be 720. When I search it on Google, it's over 1 million in results of broad search, but there are over half million of quote search. Could you please give me a light ? Thanks! By the way, how to measure the ration between request and auction to decide if it is good or not. Many Thanks! All the best! p.s. Great and prompt support from SaleHoo. It's really good. Reply

Hi Lokwing, The value displayed on Traffic Travis is the search count (global and local) - this is the number of searches made that match that keyword While the value that you are seeing on Google is different. If you search for a keyword on Google you will see for example, 2,000,000 results, this number refers to the number of pages related to the keyword you entered. Meaning there are about 2,000,000 pages for the keyword you searched, this is different from the number of searches being displayed by Traffic Travis software. Hope this helps :) . Reply
