Hello there!

I'm a Canadian looking forward to using the benefits of this service to build a successful online website. My question is in regards to Sales Taxes. In some Canadian provinces, they charge both Provincial Sales Taxes (PST) and a federal Goods and Services Tax (GST). In the "Tax Class" section of the setup, it says "Products assigned to Sales Taxes will only use the first tax rate from the list.". Does that mean if I put a separate line item, for example, in Manitoba that is 8% PST and another line item that says 5% GST,, it will only charge the 8%? Some provinces, by law, require the taxes to be separate as each government gets its piece. In Ontario (where I am), however, it is much easier as the sales taxes are Harmonized (HST) which equals 13%, so it would only be 1 line item. If someone could help, that would be great!

Hello Chris

Sorry, I'm not sure if I have enough knowledge to answer your question correctly, so it might be best that you get in touch with your county clerk.

This thread may have some helpful insights for you as it also addressed a few questions concerning taxes/fees -

Hi Richelle,

Perhaps I made the question too complex. I was asking if the message "Products assigned to Sales Taxes will only use the first tax rate from the list." means that if a Geo Region has two tax rates (PST and GST), if I should set it up as ONE tax rate because it will automatically only use the first one in that region.

Hello again Chris,

Sorry but the taxation style in Canada is one of the most complicated, with tax laws varying in the different regions. But I think this Link hidden: Login to view should help answer your question thoroughly.

Hope this helps!
