I want to go over many things with new members and teach you a little about the marketplaces in which you are trying to get into.

We are going to go over many myths that many new sellers come here believing

Myth #1 Wholesale Is 50% or more Below Wholesale Pricing.
This is one of the biggest myths that many people believe. In reality. Wholesale is only 10% to 15% Below Retail Pricing. This can be much lower if your looking for wholesale electronics. So consider this when searching for a wholesaler.

Myth #2 Designer Goods are the best thing to sell on eBay.
Another myth that is widely exaggerated. In reality designer goods are the hardest product to acquire. If your lucky you can acquire authentic goods. But you will not sell them for massive profits like you may believe. Designer goods are very high risk especially for new sellers. 95% of suppliers online sell Very convincing Fakes. In many cases even the supplier has no idea they are fake.

Myth #3 The best authentic goods come from China
Absolutely. Alot of these goods are made in china. However chineese manufacturers are not authorized to sell these goods. If a chineese supplier has enough material to make 300,000 pairs of shoes. And NIKE GLOBAL only orders 250,000 Pairs. These manufacturers make the remaining shoes and sell them on basically a black market. Small chineese sellers that will sell them to you. These are not officially licensed by NIKE and are considered Fakes. You can get into alot of trouble selling these shoes. This is the situation with all Designer manufacturers. They cannot curb this problem but they still have their goods made in chineese factories because the labor for them is unbelievably cheap.

Myth #4 Electronics is the best and most profitable field to get into on eBay
Absolutely not. Electronics are the worse possible items to sell. Yes they are popular sellers. But not the most profitable for the sellers. Most of your sellers that are titanium powersellers make money on sheer volume. Not per unit. Most sellers only make a few dollars profit on each item. There are DVD sellers that make more money then a electronics seller. And DVDs are hardly profitable on eBay for a new seller.

Myth #5 eBay is the best marketplace to sell my goods
This has quickly become untrue. eBay is only a place to get rid of your stuff fast. But not without a loss of value on the item. Everything on eBay sells for below wholesale or way below wholesale. This has a lot to do with recent seller strikes. Changes to eBay's system that have made sellers and buyers leave in masses. And the fact that everyone buying on eBay expects to get everything for dirt cheap prices. And that many good products are flooded so bad on ebay the value of the item has died.

It is still a great place to sell if you do your research.
Other very popular sites are:
Link hidden: Login to view
Link hidden: Login to view
Link hidden: Login to view
Link hidden: Login to view
Link hidden: Login to view
Link hidden: Login to view

Generally you can make more money on other sites then you can on ebay. Ebay still only gets 3% of the online shopping marketplace. Thats a big percentage to have but still you can do better then ebay. Dont let anyone make you think any different.
Myth #6 paypal is the best payment processing service for US sellers
Actually paypal is the largest but its far from the best. Paypal is geared more for buyers then sellers. Expect poor seller support. Never winning a dispute with a buyer and them letting every chargeback go through at your cost. Paypal also has the worst customer service department and many of their staff are trained to lie, and do anything they can to delay your requests. They are also the only company that has a proven track record of freezing your account and stealing your money. You can visit Link hidden: Login to view for more info on this.

One of the best alternatives is Using First Data Merchant Services Link hidden: Login to view. It takes about 24 hours to setup. And you can use your own bank account. You can accept credit cards, fight charge backs yourself. And basically manage every financial aspect of your business without worrying about a frozen account or the high fees paypal charges.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well that ends the most common myths of selling online. We just wanted to educate you a little before your quest begins.

We recommend that many of you consider buying in bulk. Yes it costs some money. And we know that many of you have little startup money. But we would suggest you save up your money and buy in bulk then try to jump into something now and loose that money on products that offer no big potential but high risk.

Buying in bulk and buying into liquidations is the most profitable area you can get into online. Dont fall for the dropshipping schemes you will find all over the internet. Most of them just arent worth it. Some make money on dropshipping but the majority end up loosing a huge amount of money.

Liquidations is a 480 BILLION DOLLAR A YEAR INDUSTRY. Many people make a good living buying liquidated merchandise and reselling it. Alot are millionares after doing this for several years, being smart and making proper business decisions. This is exactly how I started myself and now I run a company that buys and sells truckloads of liquidated merchandise.

I would recommend you review and read all of the stickies and Announcements on the forums as they will teach you alot.

So once again we welcome you to salehoo and we cannot stress enough. If you have a question. We are a community of sellers. We are not just here to help ourselves and we are here to help others. We are a family here and we will do what we can to help each other. You will find out that the forums alone are worth the price you paid for membership. So dont be afraid to ask us for help with any situation that may arise. :D

I am new to salehoo and have read your above posting and completley agree with the money being in liquidation and wholesale. I however was hoping that because I literally have no money to save up, that maybe I could start out by dropshipping and when I reach a certain point I could take that money and invest it in either of the above. My problem being I have already opened an ebay store was selling the odd thing from home, making no profit, and now cannot figure out for the life of me what to dropship. It doesn't need to be a huge profit maker but something that sells so that over time my feedback and profits grow enough to reinvest. If anybody could mention or narrow down the market alittle that would be great. Even a few ideas. Does dollar store stuff work? Should I stick just with the US even though I reside in Canada because of customs ect.. I would so appreciate any advice. I am racking my brain trying to figure out what to list.Thank you.

I personally believe that anyone willing and able to make a sincere effort on a dropshipping deal will come out better doing affiliate marketing. It's the same basic work, but you can find a better range of products, no problem finding the hot items, little upfront costs -- certainly less than a ton of eBay listings + a dropship membership -- and similar profit margins.

Using resources like eBay Pulse, Google Trends, Amazon's bestseller lists etc. it's easy to find what people are buying out there. Your task is to find the products at the best price from a reputable retailer who offers a decent affiliate commission, and market that from your own site.

This is hardly any different from dropshipping as far as the strategies and expense are concerned, yet it's far easier to find suitable products and services to market since you're not dealing with one or two suppliers but substantially all of them, and you're not limited to eBay and other auction sites as a selling venue, where you're racking up constant fees competing with other people selling the exact same stuff from the exact same supplier.

Hey Guys,

My name is Daniel, I'm new and reside in Australia. I'm asking a fellow ozy to write back with an answer to my question: Where can I find a reputable liquidator in Aus with similar credentials as macy's liquidators? (everything seems to be in the U.S)

Also I'm thinking of drop-shipping, can anyone give me a good referral or tell me how legaly to use a U.S dropshipper? For example; Do I need a U.S Tax id, U.S Incorporation? etc...

Thanks Heaps.
Daniel.

Hi Daniel. If you can find a reputable liquidator in Australia you will be doing a lot better than I have over the past two years. You won't find Aus liquidators on the net. You may be able to find a liquidator by actually ringing retailer headquarters and asking for the asset disposal manager or similar. However, you will need good start-up capital in order for these people to even take your call. They won't sell you a couple of grand's worth of stuff. It's a lot harder in Australia because the competition is not so fierce as it is in the USA. Most retailers' overstocks will first go to outlet stores and what doesn't sell there generally goes to large market sellers. It's a hard slog to get started in liquidation in Australia - but not impossible if you are thorough in your research and determined in your endeavours. Just keep at it if you come up against a brick wall. Persistence will pay in the end. Good luck

Difficult I can do right away. Impossible takes a little longer

I would just like to add to your great, excellent information Jimmy. If you can't possibly get an account with FirstData.com yet, Google Checkout is an excellent payment alternative also.

Its 100% fraud FREE as well, so yes if avoidable get away from Paypal when it is the best time to do so.

In addition to craigslist, ETSY.com and Bidville, the new source for online trade iOffer.com is an excellent bet for first time sellers. If you can post your own classified ads and news classifieds, that's even better.

Selling any type of designer inspired goods, high end items, or other brands you should definitely post them directly through newspaper ads or classifieds. Selling them at the above places is swift and easy.

Selling them at eBay or on someone's merchant account is 100% NOT recommended and will nearly always get your account killjoyed in action.

Remember, your best source for everything is your store. Just stock your store with hot selling items, and drive the traffic to it yourself. Then collect all the sales and take care of them whether by Google Checkout or FirstData Payment solutions or otherwise.

Hi Guru's,
My name is Nita. I'm a new membe and very excited about being a part of this great family.
I have a lot of questions.
How do we post our question under a specific category?
I'm a big fan of cutco cutlery and have knowledge about the product line. I have seen some people selling that on ebay? I called the company and they say that the stuff is only sold through their certified reps. Does anyone know about the dropshipping source?
What will be good place to hunt for refurbished laptops. I need to buy one for myself.

Thanks a lot for your help. :)

Hi everyone, my name is Vincent and reside in Malaysia. I am new to salehoo and was hoping I could start out by dropshipping and when I reach a certain point I could take that money and invest it in buying in bulk volume or in liquidation form. However, anyone please kindly to guide me how should i get started with dropshipping? For example, once i found a supplier and interest with selling their product (in salehoo), do i just cut and paste all the relevant product information (usually on their web site) and paste it in ebay or my own online store hopefully to get orders globally. once order confirmed from the buyer (in email) and payment made, then only i contact the supplier via email with the buyer information in order for them drop ship to the buyer? Is this how it usually works? I do have ebay.com.my (Malaysia) account and i also have paypal account. I need your help and advice, thanks

Hi,
I'm new and learning :) .
I plan to get Macys Profit Packs to start my online biz.

I have questions on how to pack and how to ship those products to my customers without any damages, and how to calculate these shipping handling fees? Where to get the fillings /boxes for packing?

Another concern is the return policy. How do you guyes handle it? Do you accept the return item if the customer opened it?

Thanks in advance,
Rebecca

When you setup an account with first data they will set you up with securenetshop shopping cart. It integrates with ebay so you can add payment links into winning bidder emails and you can even put the payment link on your auctions.

Hi my name is Jason I am 31 from usa and I just purchased salehoo today and I have to say I was real hesitant about signing up because some crazy guy was really bashing this site on the net .However I am glad I did .I started using e bay a while back 5yrs ago I guess I sold for a while and made a lot of purchases, but with all thats happened with e bay lately I got sick of it so I created my own online auction site for my family and friends to list stuff and try to sell I have actually had some small success with alot of advertising I have actually sold a few things and it has only been open a month so to me thats ok because I am just kinda in a trial phase with it to see how it works ,looks, adding the products which takes forever and just learning about what this is all about .I would really be interested in finding a good supplier of computer ram I know its out there because I see it on e bay all the time and I am also looking for childrens clothing. Thanks

Geez, so much info, I am also a newbie but have been selling on EBAY in aust, DGSJKELS.

Now a dilemma, wwhat to sell, when to start, how do I design a smart attractive ebay store when I myself are not creative?

Electronics seem to be flooded, I have something in mind but need to research it first, where do I start to research, failed school, $120K in debt, need to focus low, set a low goal, $100 per week would be nice, can't afford stock, thinking drop shipping, is there some sort of lower limit of sales per month, questions questions questions, I have many.

Whats affilate marketing?

Hello and thank you for the advise. I am a new member and I am still in the research stages of doing business online. I have sold a few things on Ebay but the fees between Ebay and Paypal add up quick minimizing my profit. I would like to set up my own websites and sell on other auction sites. I have researched some merchant accounts, website hosting, and affiliate marketing but I was wandering if anyone could help me out with finding some tools that can help with marketing and the optimization of my websites. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I am still brainstorming what exactly I am going to sell on my websites. I have been told in the past that I should sell things that I am interested in but I have also been told that it doesn't matter what you sell it is the marketing that gets people to your site. Is this true?

This is one of the biggest myths that many people believe. In reality. Wholesale is only 10% to 15% Below Retail Pricing. This can be much lower if your looking for wholesale electronics. So consider this when searching for a wholesaler.

This 'Myth' is quite frequently true. I've been involved in a number of industries where the wholesale price is around 50% below retail. Margins can get around 10% to 15%, but not the wholesale pricing. If you're just starting out in an industry where your wholesale price is only 10% less than retail, you're in for a lot of trouble. You'd have to move a LOT of volumn to make it worth it.

WHY IS IT THAT SALEHOO PROMOTE EBAY TO LURE YOU IN BUT ONCE YOU BECOME A MEMBER YOU FIND THAT EBAY IS THE WRONG WAY TO GO? PLEASE LET ME KNOW

I Myself do not say that you shouldnt use ebay. I think that a wiser choice would be to use as many selling venues as you can including other auction site.

Ebay is still a great company to use and there is still good profit to be made there. But ebay is not the only and last place you can go to make your money.

Hello,

This was a great article, i really ejoyed it because i tougth that when you buy from a wholesaler you can usually get 100% profit or higher, but when you said that you usually get from 10% to 15% i wanted to disappoint you but i think that you are rigth, the only way to get good profit is by accumulating the little profits that you get and re-invest that money to buy then liquidations and resell them.
What do you think about this?, do you think that trading business works like this?

Well I am in the Liquidation Industry. Im actually a broker for many retailers. I started just like everyone else that comes in here did about 12 years ago. I learned over the years the best profits I have ever made has come from liquidations and service industry. Doing a service for Money. Wholesale has never been profitable unless your in a retail field. But so many are looking for just wholesalers. That was good 8 years ago but wholesale just does not cut it today,With places like ebay and the stiff online competition most prices a product will sell for is wholesale.

So the key to making money is to save your money and buy in bulk. Stop wasting money on a few items here and a few items there.

Hi everyone. Im new to this site and I joined looking for dropshippers so I could start selling online with little to no investment and start making money to invest in my own stock.
Now the whole dropshipping idea is not looking that good to me.
My question is,' is there really any ways to make money online without having to use money to get it?'

With little money to invest I would look into affiliate marketing.
It is similar to drop-shipping without the headaches. google affiliate marketing to find useful info on how to start. Clickbank.com is where
you can get started. e-bay has a new affiliate program Ive seen mentioned here in the forums. Dont know anything about it, but search past posts to find out more.

I'm new to this too and look forward to learning heaps from this site. I've a young family of two little girls under two and not a very high paying job. So my wife and I are keen to make this work as well, and as quickly as possible to help us not only get by, but build a better future for our girls.

Fantastic to be a part of this community!

I just registered for this site and it took me only minutes to realise I have wasted my money.

This site isn't for serious business people, its a site of frustration, not elation. Its an amature site for amature people.

Total waste of money but you learn from your mistakes and fortunately this only cost me about

Hi, My name is Art and I am new to this type business and Thought I would try drop shipping to start since I have very little Capital. I hope you can help answer a few questions for me. 1- Am I better of specializing in one type of product or should I take a shotgun approach? 2- I have been looking at different drop shippers (it's very confusing) and was wondering if anyone has had experience with Inet.com. They offer a complete Package of web site and auctions for a start up one time fee of $199.00 and then a yearly membership fee of $67.00. Are they any good? they seem to be to ggod to be true. Thanks, artiem462h

If you are requesting info on suppliers I would suggest reposting into a different directory, suppliers or even general or your question may get lost.

Hi Jimmy,
How are you doing today? I guess fine. Well, this is Pink Blosom. I joined you guys this month, hoping I'll not regret ever doing so. What baffles me is that I placed an order for salehoo exclusive deal on the 8/6/08, paid $724.98 and they said I should expect the order to arrive in 5 Business days . Surprisenly, I haven't received it till this minute. Honestly, I am very worried.
My invoice #946, order #61925830. So, please Jimmy, your urgent attention to this matter will be highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Pat.

Hello, I was selling dvd boxsets on ebay and my items were taken off. Ebay never looked at my items, they just took them off and stated that they do not have the time to ck every item, so they go thru 3rd parties. and the last email they sent me after about 5 of them said the following:

'You can sell products on recordable media (such as VHS tapes, audio
tapes, CD-Rs, and DVD-Rs). However, your listing needs to state that you
are the copyright owner or a licensed reseller, and you can prove it if
requested to do so.'

On the box of the dvd's it does state that they can be resold in US and CANADA! pLEASE help with this situation, it would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Yes I was wondering what people do about the dropshippers that ask for thouse shippers asking for refferences. If I use people I know will they contact them? I just want to have access to some good dropservers that are simple to use and relliable to send products you sale.

Great advice Amy, I'm a big advocate for using those type of resources for successful ebay sales myself. Secondhand sells just as well on eaby as does new, and the profit is a lot better 99% of the time.

I wouldn't panic about myth #5 too much, jimmy was just making a point. Fact is that you can still make money on ebay, you just need to source the right products from the right suppliers.

Having said that, you should never just use one avenue such as ebay to do your marketing. There are plenty of low traffic sites out there that have free listings and cheap sale commissions. Yes, I kn ow the traffic flow is low, but you should still be using these kind of avenues while they are cheap.

Even if traffic flow is slow, it never hurts to cover as many markets as you can to increase your exposure to potential buyers.

WOULD LIKE ANY FEEDBACK ON LIQUIDATIONS.COM
HAS ANYBODY BOUGHT FROM THEM?
LET ME KNOW YOUR EXPERIENCE.

Yes, Rosa, I have recently won two auctions from Liquidation.com and my experience has not been good so far. My first purchase was for a bulk of returned iPod accessories. I only paid about $150 including shipping for two very large boxes consisting of iPod Nano second gen skins, Liz Claiborne Nano 2nd gen designer cases, iPod chargers etc. After buying the items I did my research on eBay, and I figured with a LOT of work I might be able to recover my investment or perhaps double my investment. If I double my money I will make about $150 for a couple months work. Not good! Actually I have an eBay store that is mostly empty, so at least I can use this stuff to fill the shelves so I don't have an empty store. OK, experience number two: Two days ago I received a shipment of 15 iPod 30 gigs and was shocked when I saw how they were packed. The auction manifest stated that two would not power on, three or four would power on but had no menus, and the rest would power on with menus. After doing some research I figured I might make a little tiny profit if at least six were good, and maybe a little better if I could get a few dollars for the bad ones selling them as salvage. When they arrived to my home via UPS the iPods were stacked on top of one another with NO packing in between. The box was very small and whomever packed the box stuffed one sheet of paper inside the box to fill up the empty space. I was SHOCKED that anybody would do such a stupid thing as that. I paid over $1,000 for these iPods and they were shipped as salvage to me. If they were not scratched up before they were shipped, they certainly were after they were shipped due to the fact it was metal on metal. Yesterday I filed a dispute and submitted photos of how they were packed. I spent about one minute total to see if any would power on, and they didn't. Maybe they just needed charging, but I didn't want to put out any effort on them since I was going to reject them anyway. I am PISSED to say the least. So if you are interested I'll update you on how Liquidation.com handles the problem. I can't blame Liquidation.com for what a stupid seller does, and I'm hoping I will get a full refund. I believe they have ten days to make a decision. There is no way I would be able to make my money back on these iPods in the condition they are in. I have placed a lot of bids on Liquidation.com and, according to my research on eBay, I found everything selling too high to make a profit. I'm thinking the bidders on a lot of these auctions must be selling them on their own websites or in a small retail store. There was one auction for new items, I did the research on, and it would have been worth winning. I screwed up on that one and forgot to bid on it. The auction was for 20 Altec-Lansing IM600s, and I figured I could have made about $30 each on them after eBay and PayPal. Maybe the only way you can come out ahead with Liquidation.com is to buy an entire truck load of stuff. Spend big and make a big profit, but of course you can do the same and lose your butt. My e-mail is Link hidden: Login to view should you or anyone want to e-mail me. I'm a seller on eBay using ID mazatlan. Ron

Quick one about Liquidation.com.

If you are really interested in purchasing liquidated stock items I would suggest going straight to a liquidation source.

The prices will be set, not in auction format, and if you choose your liquidator well you will not be subject to buying cherry picked loads which a large percentage are from that site.

It is becoming a very effective dumping ground for others garbage!

Hi Phil,

A lot of genuine wholesalers will require a tax id, and you will usually find the ones that sell direct to the public are selling at a higher margin which usually just makes them more of a discounted retailer!

As per liquidations

Hi would suggest that you look at real liquidators, not services like that which Liquidation.com offers if you are wanting to deal in liquidated stock. You will get a much better deal, and have a set price to buy at.

Take a look at jimmy's stock at ppwdg for some ideas, if you are based in the US. Jimmy is the community manager here, and I'm sure he would be able to give you the low down on that type of resourcing avenue.

No tax id required!

Hi Letsrock,

I would suggest making a general post in the suppliers directory for members to assist you better.

Just list the type of products you are looking for, and you should generate some ideas. I'm assuming of course that you have already tried the search engine here?

Hi Shirley,

You don't need to find a drop shipper in Canada, you can deal with drop shippers anywhere. Most, if not all, will ship worldwide for you.

Just work out what it is you want to sell, then track down your source. Lots of useful information about drop shipping, what to do, what not to do, and so on.

I'm sure you will find some of it useful.

Hi,
I am new to Salehoo. I have been selling items on ebay, items from my house, items that I purchase from retail stores at closeout prices. I do not think that you make enough profit by dropshipping. Anyone has any advice on dropshipping. I am looking for a legitimate wholesale supplier that sells items at a low enough price to make a profit I was looking at reselling Nintendo DS lites, but the prices that I see here are more than going to Walmart for $129. I have heard so many positive things about Salehoo and how so many have made a profitable amount of money, but I do not know what suppliers they are getting their products from. Please, if some one know where I can get nintendo ds lite, gps and gps accessories at a reasonable price, let me know. Could you tell me some wholesale suppliers that are low in their product pricing where you can make a little profit. I just want to start reselling some products, they do not have to be big ticket items.

Thanks
Ida

If you're in the states, take a look at Jimmy's liquidated stock at ppwdg, and read the feedback thread on the this forum with comments from other members.

Could be a good way for you to go.

I can't personally point you in the direction of a drop shipper to meet with your requirements, but I'm not sure trying to import anything into Oz is a good idea at the moment with the way our dollar is softening in the marketing place.

I would imagine that all your margin would be taken up with shipping costs. If you do want to import, then I would suggest looking at liquidated sunglasses stock for the best deals. Take a look at what jimmy has to offer through PPWDG, you'll find more information about his liquidated stock here on the forum.

He may be able to suggest an avenue for you to import through.

I need alot of HELP! I am new I have my own website. I wanted to use a dropshipper.I'm not sure how this whole thing works. Like how do I post their products on my site? Is this a good way to do it or is it better to go an online auction site? Do iI need a tax ID or a licence? Do I have to pay the dropshipper to se their site? I went to a storesonline.com lunchen, it soundedlike something I could do but after checking the BBB,I decided to try it on my own. I just want to be able to stay home with my baby.If anyone can give me advice I sure would appreciate it ALOT!

Hey waddup, this is Vic from all the way in The Netherlands. First off, great info for all newbies like meself at this section. Second is that before I joined, I had this moment that I sensed the oppurtinity to enjoy multiple sites besides eBay. Sooo, I made up two stores by two different websites and start to post a few items. Now one of them didn't accept me because I wasn't a US citizen, but the other was good for me and let me stay. After I joined this community the other day I had trouble to fall asleep. After a few hours I got out of my basket and dive into manny aspects at this service and behold: I was delighted to find a different angle to create my own space on the internet, selling original items. Oh yeah, some people sell them too, but it gives me pleasure to know that thanks to all this info I recieved the past few weeks from Sale Hoo, that it is possible to have a shot at a few glory moments of sales.

Well, forgive me if I am enthousiastic here and don't mind my grammar. I am a Dutchie...And if you ever want to have a free store online, try ecrater.com. I am Vic, spilling some beans all the way in Holland, bless you all

Hi;
My name is Diana and I am from Massachusetts. I have been selling on ebay for almost 4 years. Haven't been selling anything lately, because lack of supplies. I did well with some skin care products my mom had bought on the TV...and some precious moments figurines. I too am looking for a niche market on ebay. Also, does anyone know how to put a checkbox for your email list if they want to be notified when you have new products?

Thanks for any help. and good luck to all of you.
Have a great day?

Diana
