I've been doing this for the past few days , Its great :) I've been getting all of these too good to be true quotes for 3gs iphones and n97's from Exporters SG . So I ask where the items are located , when they say Hong kong , I reply great ! I'm having a 2 day layover in Hong kong next week can I drop in and see the items before I buy ??

If you never hear from them again its a scam , some however do give you an address and encourage a fly in and buy and for this reason i am seriously thinking of going for a trip to suss things out .

Cheers :)

Hi AlliGDigital,

Thanks for the interesting post! It shouldn't be a problem for the suppliers to provide their office address and have you view the products if they are legitimate and they've got nothing to hide. Flying to Asia is also a good idea specially if you are looking at some serious sourcing of products and if you intend to build a long-term relationship with your supplier. Negotiating prices will also be easier ;)

Cheers,

Yes the more I think about it the more I'm convicing myself of flying up to Hong Kong and checking out suppliers . Not sure if I would know where to start over there though , Trade shows perhaps . Theres only so much info you can find online .

I wonder if Singapore would better option ???

Here's a business opportunity for you from left field.

I'm sure there would be plenty here who would love to be able to fly to Asia and do their own sourcing, however the next best thing might just be to have a sourcing agent they could trust to do the foot work for them.

: )

even if you werent going to asia, thats a great way to scare away potential scammers. how many people havent got back to you after saying that? i think any one attempting to buy from asia should use that line

Word of warning, using a line like that will scare away some of the less eager scammers, however if anyone does try that line and you do hear back.....it's no guarantee that it's still not a scam.

There are some very experienced scammers out there, and they will see that one coming a mile away, then use it to play you into a false sense of security.

Ditto , It is no guarantee , but it does filter out the small timers .

Well, if you indeed decide to go, do let us know how things turn out! That should make for an interesting read.

You might try contacting the US Embassy for a translator or they may send you in the right direction.

If you do go. Make sure to purchase some things to sell when you get home to pay for the trip. Ship the items from Hong Kong to your house.

That would be the Australian Embassy for me , The idea is to purchase goods and send them back . Don't worry my suitcase and carry on will be stuffed too :)

Interesting post! If you can't go, someone else can be your representative at the Hong Kong Trade Fair...for a fee of course! :)

Jeez I'll just miss that trade fair ! I think I'm going anyway, got quotes today for late October . If anyone wants me to keep an eye out for certain things I can . But mainly I'll be overwhelmed and focused on my own goodies . I'm going to get the ferry across to Shenzhen and pay Chinavasion a visit among many others :)

You dont need to catch the ferry to Shenzhen. You can catch the train to the border and go through immigration there. As for suppliers in Shenzhen do your homework before and know who you want to speak too and where theyre located. As soon as you get through the border you will be bombarded by hawkers so it helps to be confident with knowing where you are going. Just remember 90% of everything there is fake and they are some pretty good fakes as well. Any questions please ask.

You will need a visa to get into Shenzhen which you can get at the border, if you want to go further afield into China you will need a full visa which can be obtained from the embassy in your country or at Wan Chai, Hong Kong, it can take a couple of days or you pay more and get it the next day. I have just come back after attending five trade shows including the Canton Fair. I go to HK approximately five times a year, returning in two weeks and going to the Auto Mechanika fair in Shanghai as well as checking out a factory. If you need any info on HK or the fairs please contact me. Quite happy to be the guide!
