I would like to import pen drives from UK to Ghana. I would like to do so through a courier service based in UK.

My objective is to buy the items ex VAT because they are imports. Buying ex VAT would give me competitive prices. It would therefore not matter if the company sells to me at wholesale price or not.

Does anyone know if my model can work? Why would companies not like to sell internationally? Does a company need clearance to export pen drives, external hard drives and laptops from UK to Ghana?

Please help!

Hi bageo81,

Glad to have you here with us!

Yes, if you live within the European Union then VAT will be charged.
If you live outside the Euopean Union (e.g. in America) then you do not pay VAT, so the EX-VAT/EX-TAX prices apply. This info is from Link hidden: Login to view

Why would companies not like to sell internationally?

I don’t think it is a matter of “not liking”, as there are several suppliers listed in our directory who are willing to send internationally. Some suppliers however, are limited financially, or are not willing to go through the rudiments of selling internationally, or are still at the primary stages of their business. There are also some who have had negative experiences importing to specific countries that they exclude dealing with businesses from such locations.

Does a company need clearance to export pen drives, external hard drives and laptops from UK to Ghana?

I wasn’t able to locate any specific information related to this clearance, but I assume this will most likely be in place, and your plan will not be easy. Several groups like the Environmental Agency (UK) have been pushing for the drive to stamp out the illegal export of e-waste from the UK, to Ghana. And although you are clearly not planning on importing e waste, external hard drives are among the products involved in this issue Link hidden: Login to view Apparently
E-waste presents a potential security threat to individuals and exporting countries. Hard drives that are not properly erased before the computer is disposed of can be reopened, exposing sensitive information. Credit card numbers, private financial data, account information and records of online transactions can be accessed by most willing individuals. Organized criminals in Ghana commonly search the drives for information to use in local scams.

Hope this helps. :)
