The guy who started this thread is long gone.

He only stuck around for one day. I'm guessing he applied for his refund and we'll never see him again.

Well what ideas do you guys have? We could hire a container and split the cost. It would cost us almost nothing to ship stuff to NZ compared to what we're all paying by air freight.

Problem is if we set up a buyers group: we'd all be selling the same stuff on trademe, and cutting each others profits down.

We'd have to look for a supplier that sells a wide range of goods. You people have any ideas?

I agree that we will be cutting profits if we bring in the same items. But if we are all importing from the same country we can organise a container with a shipping company and split the space. I mainly import from China. Is anyone keen to do this?

I import from the US :?

Well I'd be willing to compromise and go with China if that's what most people prefer. Finding decent suppliers in China is very difficult though.

If we import from the US we'd have lots of reputable suppliers to choose from.

Any other opinions?

why can't we just sell all the goods on trademe under one name and then split the profits instead of competing. Then we can gain a monopoly of the market.

That's an idea worth considering.

Potential benefits:
* Massive decrease in shipping costs - goods won't need to be shipped all around New Zealand once they arrive, they can just stay in one place and get sent direct to the customer.
* If we pool our money we can buy more expensive stuff than we could by ourselves. Like a helicopter! Ok maybe not a helicopter, but you get my point.
* We wouldn't have to worry about dividing up the space in the container equally and all that logistical stuff.

Potential problems:
* Trust... Someone has to be in charge of the trademe account and the shipping etc. That person will have to be very honest, because they will be handing out the profits.
* If we start seriously importing in a big way won't we be hit by tariffs? That probably wouldn't happen if we all did our own seperate things.
* We'd all have to agree on what to buy.

why dont we import goods and sell as a group instead of competing. Then we will get better prices and become a monopoly

Well I have contacted everyone who left their emails in this thread and have recieved only a few replies, so I guess most of you aren't interested in going forward with this.

Or maybe everyone is waiting for someone else to come up with the ideas and do all the hard work, which isn't fair on the people who contribute I think. I propose that only people who contribute get to be included. And once we have enough people (5 maybe?) we stop accepting new applicants.

To be honest I think if you are wanting to not split up the container then the only clean way I can see it working is if one person takes the reins creates a company and everyone else can be sharholders for paticular shipments. The person who sets up the company would take a fee for doing the leg work and the sharholders would share in the remaining profits.
Now that I type that even that sounds messy!
I still would go for the splitting of a container. Its simple we set up an account with a shipping company (each person pays their share of the costs to the shipping company in advance) you get your suppliers to send your products to their depot they pack the container. There would be a bit of honesty to make sure that you did only pack your allocated space though.
Just to give everyone an idea of prices from china to nz
20ft container $1800 us (max 22 ton) - approx 5-6 pallets of 1mx1mx2.3high
40ft container $2600US (max 24 ton) approx 12 pallets of 1mx1mx2.3m high
then you have clearance fees that are anywhere 800 to $1600nz
plus tax of 12.5% (plus duty if your items has duty).
If this puts you off maybe not for you!!! Its food for thought anyway!

Hey I didn't mean you Lisa... just the slackers who said they were keen and then disappeared

Thanks for that great info BTW, you've obviously done some research. I had a look at a few shipping company websites and couldn't make sense of the charges. I was about to call them but you saved me the trouble.

I've had a look at some chinese suppliers in the last day or so. I would need to put some time into researching suppliers and products etc, but count me in.

How much of the container would you be using?

I can probably fill atleast half a 20ft at this stage, but I can work with what ever space I get it is still a saving. But it will take a couple of months before you will be ready if your new to china.
I used a shipping company called dean freight here in hamilton, to give me all the details we can price around though. I always like to go back to them with my prices as its good to use a kiwi company they do all the leg work for you!
In my experience it is best to do a couple of sample orders with new suppliers in china. Do at least two before you can trust them. ask for refernces and make sure they are a registered company.
Try your best to make them use pay pal on your first order. Depending on what your looking for I may be able to help you email me on Link hidden: Login to view and I have a couple of agents that seem to be working quite well they may be able to help you find your products.
If anyone else is interested please let me know
cheers

Hi sorry to Lucy, I always forget to check this site! Have sent you email with a few details. If your new to salehoo as per previous posts, this site is great for info and forums like this. You can check out suppliers on the tab above. However I find the best deals in China, but it can be at a big risk - but you live and learn!
If your serious about a container please email me on
Link hidden: Login to view, I dont mind coordinating it but please note you are looking at costs of around $1000 per person.
I also wholesale so if your looking for a paticular item email me and I will find it for you.
cheers

Hey new zealand people, im located in christchurch and i see there is a few people from new zealand here that have joined this system.
I have setup a social networking website, which inside i have setup ''soley for NZ SaleHoo members'' a club so we can network a bit better.
If you go to Link hidden: Login to view
Join up and sign up to the money club i have created, we can all communicate and form buying groups and work as a team.
From new zealand its a little harder as most sites and affiliate sites are tailored for the USA.
We can use the site to instantly talk to each other and keep in contact.
Discuss topics and help each other find products

i welcome any member of this website to setup a club also for there own areas.
its 100% free, yet ive set the club to be moderated so only members of this site will be able to see what we talk about etc..

i look forward to forming a good community of like minded business people for the new zealand region
See you there.. lets make so money! :P

Hey people,

I'm keen to join forces with someone to start selling goods. I can build and administer the website too so can cut costs in that area. I just lack cashflow at the moment but I'm very keen.

If you've got an idea or want to get heads together and give something a try, let me know.

I'm on the Kapiti Coast and would be interested in importing however I am more interested in specific things and wouldn't be a regular importer. I think all the ideas here are great but personally don't want to get involved in setting up a company and all that.

HOWEVER I do have a need - basically I want to ship some things in, not enough for a whole container but enough to make air freight inviable.

What I suggest is that those keen on it organise the container shipments from countries such as China and USA but particularly USA where there are a lot of great deals and brands which we can't get here in NZ. The organisers could then get people to pay for the shipments in based on space and weight and all that stuff. For example if I used up 20% of a container and someone else had 40% and someone else had another 40% then we each get charged but the reality is that we pay more for the total 100% than those organising it pay for the container and so there is a cool wee profit for those running the show.

If the above makes sense to you and you wanna run it and get those profits then please do. And I will be a grateful customer :)

Hey hi peeps!

Its great to see a good kiwi contingent here! ive been a member of salehoo for ages now, and have only been popping in now and again because im too busy having fun and running my own business lol

Just wanted to say to the newbie kiwis out there, DO YOUR HOME WORK FIRST before you put any of your hard earned moolar down!! there is an abundance knowledge to be had/gained from these forums so be a sponge and absorb it all like i did mofo's! haha

Personally i think wholesale and some Liquidated stock from the US depending on the items of course is the way too go ;-)

thanks Pip

Hi

I am based in Auckland and would be interested in sharing a container. I think this is the best idea as this is the problem most small business people faced (specially those who do not have that much capital to fill in a container yet!). I guess the idea of setting up a company is not that good idea yet as there are many legalities involved and this should be done by 3-5 people I guess. I will be interested in the futture when I have enough capital to invest.

Please count me in my email Link hidden: Login to view. I am still in the process of researching which products to buy from China but would definitely be looking for somebody to share container as this will surely mimimize costs.

The buying site set up by onlineshopping is not working as I went there Link hidden: Login to view. Actually settting a yahoogroup with a moderator can work.this is actually a good idea as several containers can be run at the same time and somebody can just inform the group if a container is being filled in and somebody wants to hop in ( I have never run a container before so I hope this makes sense)

Thanks

Hi guys,

If you are worried about all ending up with the same products to sell on TradeMe, you can always use one of our suppliers who offer a wide range of items.

Here is a China-based one: Link hidden: Login to view

And a US-based one: Link hidden: Login to view

Alternatively, you could contact a freight forwarder and see if they can help you out by arranging for each of you to use the same container, but have your stock ordered from different suppliers (if you can decide on a country to order from together).

This might not help out with sharing high MOQ's but is one other option.

If you want to get in touch with a freight forwarder, here are a couple of options:

I haven't used any of these, so cannot guarantee them. If you want to find a few more options, try Googling "freight forwarder Auckland" or "freight forwarder New Zealand"

Sounds like an opportunity
What line of products are you interested in ??
I am relatively new to this and I think it would be good to work with someone first maybe for a while
There is a lot of talk about making money from dropshippers etc but its not that easy when you go to do it
How is it going for you and any advice would be very welcome

Hi Mita,

I'm not sure if this plan actually pushed through, if you noticed the thread was started back in 2008 and the last post prior to yours was in 2011. Just a heads up in case no one might reply to your post.

Cheers!

Sorry Mita, not really sure how things turned out for the members trying to create this buying group.

No real update was made, unfortunately.

It's usually a case of one or two being interested in doing something like this, but then they drift off into other ventures and lose focus. Then every now and then someone else adds their name, and the same happens again. Getting everyone interested at the same time is what is required to at least get some discussion going about doing it altogether, but for whatever reason, that doesn't happen and venture ideas like this just tend to fade away.

For anyone really interested, I would suggest including something like your Skype or Yahoo, then as others come along they can add you in and you'll end up building a network sooner or later.
