Hi Everyone,

I am from Australia and have a few questions. I will try to make this short; I have been looking at this forum for 3 hours now and I found some of what i am looking for but not all so here goes...

* I want to buy wholesale clothing and sell at my local markets, do i need an ABN to do this?

* Can I import clothing from overseas without paying taxes?

* What is the difference between a reseller id and a tax id? Is a reseller id an ABN in Australian terms?

* Do many overseas wholesalers/liquidators send directly to your house? I have no idea how to organise getting it to my door if it is dropped off at a dock or something

Please if anyone could help me I would appreciate it. I think i should go to bed now .so tired.lol :)

Q1. An Australian Buisness Number is required for anyone trading as a business, and if you are going to trade as a business entity you would also need to consider a business name. Your ABN is free, however a business name is around the 100 dollar mark, depending what state you are trading in.

There are some exemptions to having to register a business name, for example if you are trading in your own name, but just check with your local authority to be sure. In Queensland that is Smart Licence, but your local Consumer Affiars department will be able to assist.

If buying wholesale, you will find a lot of genuine suppliers require an ABN to do business with you.

In summary of your question, while you do not absolutely need an ABN to sell if you are not trading as a business, you may find it difficult to trade with suppliers without one.

Q2. You can import up to around $1000 in declared value before any duties are imposed, but double check with customs to ensure that figure is close.

Q3. Whether or not you can have the items delivered to your door is up to you when choosing your shipper. You can have a container delivered to your front door if you want to arrange it.

Hope that was enough info to get you rolling, and BTW, it's great to see someone not wanting to sell on ebay for a change. You will be able to source good prices here for your market because your offline margin will be higher.

I would also suggest using ebay as a source, it's easier to buy cheap from ebay than sell for good margin, so keep an eye out on the wholesale lots. You can find some great buys there for markets, including clothes.
