Hello Everybody,

I asked a supplier why he would not accept PayPal as this is the only form of payment I use. This was his reply:

Due to the financial control on the foreign exchange, the PayPal account in China could not withdraw more than $2,500 to the bank account in one month, that is to say it should take about 40-60 days to cash the payment if we withdraw the payment via check. Hope for your understanding!

Does anybody know if this is true?

Thanks,
Robert

If sending payment to china, be very very careful. Alot of scammers out there specially if they don't accept credit card payments. If this supplier ask you for a bank transfer or western union,...... TURN BACK AND RUN! Do not in any way send payments via this form because you'll never see your money again. I hope this helps.

Actually most suppliers in China are not allowed to have a credit card. Their government only gives credit card permissions to the higher ups. I guess they don't want to have the debt problem that we are facing in the U.S. While I agree that Western Union and money transfers are generally a bad idea, sometimes that will be the only way to pay for Chinese merchandise. Make sure that you ask a lot of questions and cover all your bases. Who knows, they may be legit.

They best way to know if the company is legit or not if dealing with Chinese companies is to really visit the country. Heck, I will not deal online nor via phone due to the fact that almost all chinese so called suppliers are scammers. Not talking trash, I'm just stating the facts. If a company states that they do not accept credit cards due to whatever reason, I'll just turn back and run, no questions ask. At least that way, I will not have headaches in the end.

I deal with a company in Hong Kong that happily accepts credit cards and Paypal. As a matter of fact they tell me to use Paypal.

So if you running into companies saying they wont use them then just move on.

Its just not worth it!

Trust me, you don't want to do that at all.

Ask the seller if they can get Google Checkout. Google Checkout is basically a merchant account and is fraud proof, anyone in China or overseas can have and has HAD a Google Checkout account before.

You are not required to use any sort of credit card with Google Checkout, thank goodness. Much better option than Paypal.

Thanks a lot for all the info. Sometimes it is tempting to order and pay with a non secure method.
I will move on, as suggested, until i find a trusted company.
Cheers

Hi, i do own a second hand store which sells most everything.
I am planning to sell this business and i like to continue with a few sales on line. It has to be drop shipping because i am located in Yukon, Canada. Most companies do not even ship to Yukon because there is no UPS ground. To me it does not really matter what i sell as long i can find a drop shipper who has competitive prices. Every time you find somebody, with so called wholesale prices, you look it up on the internet and find cheaper prices there.
It seems to me, as long as there is a middleman involved one does not have a chance to be competitive.
Cheers
Rob

I peronally do not like Paypal as I've had my account frozen by them. If you go to Link hidden: Login to view or Link hidden: Login to view you'll understand why China(like many Americans) hate PP.

PP frequently freezing the money in your PPaccount so they can pool all the PP accounts together and make interest off of your money-as noted in PP's terms and conditions-

Personally a merchant account is the only way to go.

You guys have me worried about paypal. I just started selling on Ebay a few weeks ago. I have made 45 sales from junk around the house and garage sales. Alot of fun IMO. I do not want to get screwed though, seeing how I don't have ALOT of $ , like most of us. Yes I'm a newb, that's why I paid the $ for this site etc..---
Should I change my account to NOT accept paypal and set up a merchant account on Ebay or is Paypal my only real choice there?

What I would do if your just a small time seller is to trasfer most of your money into your bank account. If you make money trasfer it. Never use paypal like a normal bank account and store much funds.

Paypal is the most common Payment form on the internet. They are also the largest Scam site you will ever come across. They have stolen literally billions from their members and have lost every small and class action lawsuit thrown at them.

They freeze accounts and hold the funds for 6 months. Some they never release the money.Guess what they are doing with your money while it sits in limbo. They are using it on investments and they are collecting the interest. The FICA does not even recognize them as a legitimate financial institution. Thats pretty bad when a multibillion dollar transaction company is not recognized nor insured by the FICA

If your small time use paypal but withdrawl your funds often. If your a big seller or a high dollar amount seller use a merchant account.

Thanks Jimmy,
I feel alot better about having made this purchase, seeing how you have responded to me so quickly with great advice. After I had posted, that was kinda what I was thinking. By not leaving alot of money in my account they wont be able to 'steal' it. So, I went to my paypal account and transferred all but $20, to pay for shipping, fees, etc.
Thanks again and I look forward to getting to know the Salehoo crew alot better!!!

Well said.

What is most likely to happen is paypal will place a hold on your account. That doesn't mean they will keep your money but will limit your ability to take money out for a period of time.

You can usually reverse the hold by providing tracking or a call to Paypal to explain your situation in which they have been known to just reverse the hold.

They will also release the hold with a pos. FB from your buyer.

What you can do to limit holds is to upgrade your account to a business account and get the debit card. The other benefit to this is you can use the debit card for purchases and cash withdrawals.

Or if you have a lot of money(Only with the Business account and debit card) in there, go to Walmart and for a modest fee get a money order which is treated as a regular purchase by Paypal. Meaning the purchase won't effect your daily withdrawal limit.

Or use the card for daily expenses.

With the debit card and or withdrawal method it is a good idea to only keep a modest balance of around 50 to 70 dollars in Paypal at any one time.

Sounds like you have already made several sales and if your FB is 98% or above and DSRs are above 4.5 your risk of getting a hold is greatly reduced.

Once you get to 100FB your not as likely to have a hold placed.

Lol if your a big enough seller that you need a business account with paypal you might as well have a merchant account. Those hefty fees that paypal charges can cost you thousands extra a year just in processing fees. Most merchant accounts charge 2% I think paypal charges 2.7% to 4.0 % based on the transaction.

That is a huge difference if your selling 30K to 200K in products each year. The more you make the more you loose just by using paypal.

Also when you have a dispute with your buyer you can have all sorts of problems with Paypal. Limited account usage. Frozen funds, frozen account, Buyer wins dispute even though you have proof of shipping and any other reason.

And paypal literally never sides with a seller. Only the buyers in most of the cases. When a Buyer files a complaint they generally win.

With a merchant account you generally win the dispute as long as you can prove the product was shipped or the transaction was handled to the agreement between you and the buyer. Very simple.

Why would you want to worry about that. If your a business owner you should not have to worry about doing things paypals way just to keep your money. You have many more things to worry about then having your account frozen and your entire business crashing into the ground because funds you need for shipping , bill paying and ordering are frozen. And the benifits of a debit card does not excuse the crap you have to go through with paypal.

With a merchant account your account is tied to your bank account which you can get a debit card for. You don't have to worry about your funds being frozen or anything.

Jimmy your absolutely correct in what you say. And with a pre 07 account that is the way to go.
With post 07 accounts or ones made after nov.07, merchant accounts are tougher to get recently.

I am mainly speaking to people who are new to eBay. If you are new to eBay they are not going to make it easy for someone to get a merchant account.

There are tricks to get around this but it is not something a newbie wants to worry about.

The best thing for a newbie is to play Paypals game until they get established.

There are two new payments procrs you can try now. Moneybrokers and Paymate which sellers can use now and are approved by eBay.

Is Paymate actually any better though?

I got enlisted with a new account anyway. How does Paymate stack up to what's been going on from before?

And yeah Jimmy has it completely correct. He got shafted when $1000 was in that account. My father in fact got shafted twice when he had $1400 in the account, after the juicer/coffee maker all got sold.

He was incensed but I didn't dare tell him the obvious truth, that this would happen and he should have sold it through craigslist.

Now like he spoke there a merchant account is normally pretty infallible, and credit cards are the fastest way to do any *ANY* type of business - so not having one is not the way to play.

Amazon payments is a merchant account & there isn't some crazy surcharge on every transaction, ala Paypal. They're a very good one. Another major one is Google Checkout since its so common globally. Another big one is 1st data solutions, wish I could use that with eBay for now on. Boy would that save alot of time!

Paypal is just rotten. When the eBay team decided that's the main pay processor we'll use maybe they weren't even thinking, because in either case its infuriated the community and that is probably how their competition Bonanzle etc is really wiping the floor with them.

Oh and as for why I just flat moved away from paypal after moving to merchant, well here was the scenario.

Somebody purchased a gift for the birthday party off of my store on IOFFER.COM and it was all packed and put into the shipping list.

I notified Paypal actually that it was already paid for, yet paypal showed no record of any payment even going into the account - via credit card or anything.

The buyer was incensed, and this went on for 24 whole hours!

FINALLY, after over a day the payment showed up in the Paypal account confirming everything. The whole package & set was shipped, but they kept asking me why it took that long for Paypal.

Again I didn't know why other then the 'HOLD' scenario that had been something of a nusciance, as I never had it happen when I sold the watches. I checked their terms of service. It was infuriating & so I switched everything over to a different payment method being *OUR* preferred choice & didn't go back. Google Checkout is so easy that many just flat prefer it.

Yes I know. I just started a seller account with Bonanzle and am only using Google checkout myself. I will never use Paypal on anything but eBay.

Paypal is so stupid. They are disaffecting thousands of sellers from eBay who will never use them for anything else but. Sort of like the implosion Stormpay caused a couple of years ago. Any valid seller will never use them ever as with Paypal..

I will never use them ever for anything outside of eBay. They s@ck.

Yeah but you know why they do that? eBay owns a percentage of Paypal so (inaudible sounds here) it's fairly obvious they will want to make good money off their pay processor.

Yet it is just stupid to be honest. And I'm quite happy that at I Offer, Craigslist & likewise I can accept Google Checkout **OR** Amazon Payments anywhere in the world **OR** 1st data solutions **OR** MPAAY actually.

Can you accept all those options at Bonanzle? I do hope they get the idea to do that and move off the old guard because paypal really is crap. It truly sucks the life out of production.

Btw, when I really got going with my Amazon merchant account I was pleased over the fact I could fight any chargebacks at will **AND** keep track of my bank account as it was setup using my bank. No fraud- no fees- instant access to **MY** funds period, when I buy anything as well or sell. Same thing with Google, 1st data, all the rest of them

I compared it with paypal & just it was laughable that paypal seriously calls itself a 'Payment resource provider' with a straight face.

Yea and Paypal is what kept eBays stock from being even worse in last years fourth quarter.

eBay would be at 8 or 9 bucks without that.
