This may be totally off for this website or even this topic/forum section BUT does anyone know how/who/where to go if you want someone to manufacture goods/designs/jewelery/etc. that you designed? Also, what do you do to prevent them from stealing your idea, making the products and selling it as if it were their own idea. I've researched copyrights and patents...and so lets just say my item is copyrighted-then what? I figured I would ask on here because a lot of people do work with China and I thought that may be the country to work with..but I'm really at a loss and I haven't found much via Google research. I could be using the wrong keywords...but...I figured I would give Salehoo a shot. I'm a member so why not :) Wouldn't hurt to ask right? Thanks :)

Definitely right, atticblingandthings! :) We're here for your questions. :)

Just a quick note though, the term to use is 'design patent', it is a patent granted on the ornamental design of a 'functional item' such as jewelry. Copyright is a protection provided to the writers/ authors of “original works of authorship,” including literary, artistic, dramatic, musical and certain other intellectual works.

I haven't tried patenting a design myself, but it does sound like the right start to something grand. ;) I'll look into this topic and will be back shortly.

:)

Hi atticblingandthings,

I will have to retract my words. I learned that ‘copyright’ is being used for protecting jewelry designs as well. These info you may already know when you did your research on patent and designs. :)

I’d like to share this information however to everyone reading our thread. :)

According to Link hidden: Login to view in 1947 the Copyright laws were reformed to allow jewelry makers to give copyright to their designs. It is said that having a Copyright is more effective and efficient than patents because they cost less, and are given faster approval. For a company to declare that they have copyright on their jewelry, a small copyright symbol is used next to the company's name. And if you need to apply for a patent, here’s a tutorial to help you create and format your application, including details on where to file it - Link hidden: Login to view

The challenge for a beginner in looking for a jewelry manufacturer is that most of them will not make large quantities of the item without receiving some cash up front. Unless you are ready to pledge a huge capital, it would be best to find a company willing to come up with the funding for the manufacturing.

The steps in setting up a deal vary with each manufacturer, depending on your requirements, but they all start with initially establishing contact. :)

I also tried searching for a manufacturer and found one that can handle simple process orders of few pieces (and can also produce 1000 or more) – Link hidden: Login to view It is not in our directory, but I checked on its domain and saw that it has been existing since 1997.

Hope this helps. :)

Check out ProjectAsia.com Depending on your market, they may be able to help you.

If you are looking specifically for jewelry, you might consider checking India rather than China. Some really amazing fabricators over there.

The main problem I see in sending your work overseas is that china used to not and probably still don't honor copyrights or patents. That is where all the influx of fake designer products come from. Even companies like Nike have a problem with that. I have heard of companies in China having a contract with someone like Nike to make their shoes and when they fill their contract that they just keep making the product and sell them to any buyer that will Buy.
