I would love to hear how people managed to bring a high volume of traffic to their site from nothing...been doing back links, hired a reputable company etc.

If you have any suggestions please let me know.

Whatever you do, your first step should be to stop buying "SEO packages" in any size. Based on your own assessment of the results, you're either being ripped off or just spending money on incompetent providers. Given the proven research behind the value of a first page SERP rankings, the only way that is a money hole for you is if the keyword itself is not actually worth pursuing, or you're being charged well over market rates for the linkbuilding service. And if your ranking dropped as soon as you stopped paying, this suggests to me the latter.

Aside from possible Google penalties in the event of an algorithm update, this is the big pitfall of buying backlinks -- so many of the services out there are just shysters providing no real, lasting value. Take your "SEO" budget, and spend it on content, advertising, or just put it in your pocket. Any of those three routes would pay you better than purchasing backlinks.

Hi kirsty,

You can actually try driving traffic to your site by yourself provided you know a bit of SEO and have an SEO software you can count on :) I recommend trying our very own Link hidden: Login to view software to help you with your SEO needs. You can download your free copy and start doing simple keyword searches to see if you are using the right ones!

Also, you have to remember it's not actually the number of backlinks that count but the quality of backlinks. A few high quality backlinks have more value than lots and lots of low quality backlinks.

All backlinks are not the same in quality and that obtaining a bunch of low-quality links can actually harm your search engine ranking rather than improving it. You are at risk for being flagged by Google (in particular) and the other search engines.

Stay away from hundreds of links that all come from the same origin (usually referred to as - link farms). These are easily tracked and very much frowned upon by the search engines so they will get you nowhere fast. Also steer clear of businesses that advertise the buying and selling of links – these links will also sooner or later be flagged by the search engines and they are not worth the risk.

There is also no set number of backlinks to be established in order to achieve a certain position in search results. Backlinks constitute only one of the more than 200 parameters that google uses (and google does not tell us what all those 200+ parameters are) to determine rankings and so we can not make generalizations as to how many backlinks are needed to get to the top position

This a question more than a reply. What other search engines are there that are reasonably effective. Better to get some ranking elsewhere than none at all I would think. I am not far off launching a website and can see that I may possibly have the same problem as Kirsty .

Hello cubandane,

By far I think Google's at the top of the list. You can also try Yahoo and Bing.

You can work at building links to help bring traffic to your site and make sure your product/page title are SEO optimized.
