Can somoene tell me what drop shipping is?

Maybe this has been asked already, i hope not, for fear of looking silly :) Anyway, i hear alot of talking about this, and most experinced people seem to say it isn't a good idea. My question is, what is it exactly, how does it work?

you are not asking a silly question

dropshiping is in laymens terms stockless retailing

if you can find a genuine dropshipper they will supply you with specifacations and pictures of products they distribute plus the cost of the item for your purchase as a reseller

you either list these items on your own web site or an auction site , when your customer purchases the item from you , you then order the item from your dropshipper pay for it , then your dropshipper sends the item to your customer , you dont even see it but collect the profit from your own mark up on the original price
